Mahwah Politician Eyes Assembly Run

Former Bergen County Freeholder Rob Hermansen plans to run for his party's nomination for an assembly seat, reports say

A former Mahwah Councilman and ex-Bergen County Freeholder plans to run for the Republican nomination for a state assembly seat in the 39th District, reports said Wednesday. According to a NorthJersey.com report, Rob Hermansen, who served as a Mahwah councilman before he won a seat on the Bergen County Freeholder Board in 2009, announced Tuesday his intent to replace Republican Assemblyman Robert Schroeder, who is under indictment. Schroeder “so far has resisted calls from party leaders to step down from the Assembly, where he has served since 2010,” the report said. “An indictment issued on Dec. 21 accuses him of stealing $1.89 million from five people who lent him money for a business venture and with writing 47 bad checks to 12 …

Debate Shows Freeholder Candidates Think Alike on Key Topics

The League of Women Voters hosted a debate at Bergen Community College featuring the candidates for Bergen County Freeholder on Tuesday afternoon

For all of the differences on party platforms, the four candidates for Bergen County Freeholder: Republican’s Freeholder Robert Hermansen (Mahwah) and former Mayor Margaret Watkins (River Edge) with Democrats Councilman Steven Tanelli (North Arlington) and Tracy Silna Zur (Franklin Lakes), showed they are more alike than many have realized during Tuesday afternoon’s debate at Bergen Community College. From questions on consolidating the Bergen County Police and Sheriff’s Departments to tightening the Pay-to-Play ordinance and making sure to keep Bergen Regional Medical Center, the candidates touted similar ideas on how to best move the County forward for the benefit of taxpayers. Consolidation While the Freeholders voted down an ordinance …

Voss Ready for Her Move to Freeholder

Former assemblywoman talks about her transition from legislator to freeholder

Taking time out from packing up her Fort Lee legislative office for the move to her new headquarters in Hackensack, Assemblywoman and Freeholder-elect Joan Voss laughed as she recounted her “high-heeled” boots-on-the ground campaign for Bergen County Freeholder. “My running mate [David Ganz] wanted to know if I taught all the residents of Bergen County,” Voss said, explaining that wherever they went, she ran into her former students.    Having taught at Fort Lee High School for 41 years, there is no doubt that she taught thousands who are scattered throughout Bergen County. Thousands who came out to vote her into the office of Freeholder by a comfortable margin in November.  Voss, a Democrat who began her political career in Fort Lee as a …

This article states: "With the exception of Fort Lee being added, District 37 remained virtually untouched." Not exactly accurate. In addition to acquiring Fort Lee, the new District 37 now also includes Alpine, Cresskill, Northvale and Rockleigh, while it no longer includes Bergenfield, Maywood, Ridgefield Park and Rochelle Park. Democrats still outnumber Republicans about 2-to-1 overall, but …   more ›

Mayoral, Freeholder Candidates Share Views With Voters

Tea Party hosts candidates night

One Mahwah mayoral and Bergen County freeholder candidate shared their views and fielded questions from a group of voters at a Tuesday night “Candidates and Issues” event hosted by the Mahwah Tea Party. Current Mahwah Mayor John DaPuzzo shared with residents his political history in the township, which includes time on the Planning Board, Town Council, and serving as appointed mayor since Richard Martel died in March. He also defended some of his positions, namely his support of the controversial 750,000-sq.-ft. retail and office development at the Crossroads land at the intersection of Routes 17 and 287. DaPuzzo, who said he considers himself "extremely informed,"explained that he is "scared" of what might be developed in the spot if not …
