Roslyn Kind talks childhood, her love of performing, and her plans for her Mahwah show
This Saturday, Mahwah will host renowned singer Roslyn Kind for the first time. In addition to credits that include over four decades of singing and recording, and performing in venues like Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, Kind is the younger sister of legend Barbara Streisand. “I guess you could say I grew up in somewhat of a musical household,” Kind told Patch of her upbringing. “Some lovely voices certainly came out of it. But, my mother wasn’t ever a stage mother.” In fact, Kind considered becoming a teacher before settling on singing as a career. “In the end, performing won out. I really love what I do.” Kind began her career recording her first album the day after her high school graduation in 1968. Kind said the best part of her …

Tribute to Ol' Blue Eyes coming to Mahwah
When Steve Kazlauskas was a teenager, he didn’t listen to much Frank Sinatra music. He preferred Dean Martin. But based on his show, “Echoes of Sinatra,” coming to the Berrie Center at Ramapo College this weekend, you’d never know it. During the show, Kazlauskas sings Sinatra hits that span the performer’s career and shares stories and trivia about Sinatra’s life. His passion for Sinatra started when he was 18 years old, “when a girl broke my heart. So I wrote a poem.” “I wasn’t a singer, but I had a friend who was in a band who suggested we turn the poem into a song and that I sing it.” After someone at a performance mentioned that Kazlauskas’s voice sounded similar to the classic crooner’s, he was inspired to make music his career. …

Beauty Shop Stories Tuesday night at the Berrie Center for $15
This Tuesday, Mahwah will learn the story of Faye Lane. The actress will hit the Berrie Center stage to tell the “stories of her life.” Her one-woman show, "Faye Lane’s Beauty Shop Stories" focuses on the stories that made her the person she is today, she said. Her life stories are diverse – she grew up in Texas, at her mother’s beauty shop. “A lot of the show is about growing up in that beauty shop culture, about being a fat little girl who wanted to be a beauty queen,” Lane said. “Then, about three-quarters of the way through the show, I sell everything I own and move to London on a one-way ticket.” Lane said her trip from Texas to London, and back, led her to a conclusion she didn’t expect. “I left looking for a fairytale, but I ended …

A ‘Jersey Boy’ is taking his act from the Broadway stage to Mahwah this weekend. Jarrod Spector, who currently plays Frankie Valli in ‘Jersey Boys,’ is taking a night off from the bright lights of Broadway to perform at Ramapo College’s Berrie Center Saturday night. Spector says his show, “Minor Fall, Major Lift,” will take the audience through major turning points in his life that landed him where he is now. “The two questions I get asked the most are ‘how’d you get the job starring in Jersey Boys’ and ‘is that your real voice’” Spector told Patch. “This show answers those questions.” Spector said his journey to Broadway was a long one that started as a child actor. Growing up in Philadelphia, he was featured on a local weekly singing …

The band "does not take itself too seriously," its front man said
This Friday, Mahwah is going to be taken over by acoustic rock. Asbury Park native Southside Johnny and his band, The Poor Fools, will be taking the Berrie Center stage at Ramapo College. "Southside" Johnny Lyon is most well know as a rock act, performing with the Asbury Jukes. However, the 40-year performing veteran said he wanted to try something different. “I wanted to perform more intimate shows, so I put together this smaller, acoustic band,” he said. So far, Southside Johnny and the Poor Fools have performed about 10 shows. Though the Jukes have played Ramapo before, this will be the new band’s debut on the Mahwah stage. “We are guessing that people who have heard my music before will come to the show, and we are hoping that a lot of…
