Officials say the newly-hired Superintendent will play a role in hiring a permanent replacement next year
An interim principal who started at one of Mahwah’s elementary schools last year will stay in the township for one more school year before the district looks to hire a permanent replacement, district officials announced at a Board of Education meeting last week. Roger Bayersdorfer will remain principal of the Betsy Ross School for one more year, Assistant Superintendent Janet Donohue said last Wednesday. “We are very happy to have [Bayersdorfer] for another year,” she said. “He is a pro, has been an instructional leader, and is so gentile with the kids. He’s really great.” Donohue said the district decided not to look for a permanent replacement this year for a few reasons. First, she said the district is looking to provide stability at …

Betsy Ross third graders welcomed Grammy-award nominated songwriter Steve Seskin and his acclaimed songwriting workshop for schools. The students and teachers enjoyed this unique opportunity to collaborate with Seskin to write original lyrics and music and create a personalized motivational song, based on their own concerns and community at school. In the morning, each class developed a section of the song, building on the previous classes' work. At end of day, the entire grade performed the song for the whole school. Later this month, you can visit Seskin's website to listen to the Betsy Ross students' song, "Never Give Up." Seskin has conducted hundreds of these workshops for schools around the country. Third class section added to drop average class size from 25 to 17
Betsy Ross Elementary School will have one more section of Kindergarten this year, thanks to higher than average enrollment numbers, district officials said at a school board meeting last week. “We reached a critical breaking point,” in terms of enrollment numbers, Assistant Superintendent Janet Donohue said Wednesday. “We thought better to [add the class] now than wait until the middle of the year to add it.” Once 50 students enrolled, the school moved to have a third section of Kindergarten, and a new teacher, added. Susan Pielka, who had previously been working as a long-term sub in the district, was appointed to the position. The job is part-time. According to last year’s Betsy principal Christine Zimmermann, the three sections of half…

The tree is in the process of being removed, as per school officials' direction
Mahwah DPW crews and Fregmen Brothers contractors were at Betsy Ross Monday morning, removing debris from a tree that area residents say had been struck by lightning during thunderstorms last Friday. According to Mahwah schools Buildings and Grounds Supervisor Scot VanDemark, the tree did not cause any damage to the school building when it was struck. But, "as it is either dead or dying, it needs to be removed," he said. DPW director Keith Hallissey said the tree is going to be scheduled for complete removal in the "near future. [Monday] our crews removed the broken branches on the ground and those that were hanging in the tree itself." The DPW also removed another tree that had been "completely knocked down," in Friday's storm, Hallissey…
