Earlier and staggered store openings result in shorter lines, less frenzy the day after Thanksgiving.
Varied opening and sale times at retailers for the Black Friday rush seemed to spread out shoppers throughout North Jersey’s biggest stores this weekend. This year marked a new marketing tactic—more retailers opened Thanksgiving night. While some stores bought into the new trend, others stuck to the traditional early-morning opening times Friday, while others chose to open at 7 or 8 a.m. And, the different opening times gave shoppers a lot of options, and the ability to hit multiple stores. Long nighttime lines awaited shoppers at the Rockaway Townsquare Mall, which saw customers skipping Thanksgiving dinner to line up almost a day before some stores’ 8 and 9 p.m. openings. The line at the Walmart in Watchung started forming at 1 p.m. …
Entire mall opened at midnight on Black Friday. Clothes, electronics were the early hot-ticket items.
Clothes and electronics were the hot-button items of the first hours of the holiday shopping season. Hundreds of people lined up outside of the Willowbrook Mall for hours, waiting for any number of the stores inside to open. It was the first time in its history, the entire mall, excluding some restaurants in the food court, opened at midnight on Black Friday. The entire mall, save for the food court, was open. “This is what its all about,” said Hector Ramirez as he stood in the line for Old Navy. “Its great to spend time with your family but its also fun to come out and save some money too.” Sears, one of the mall’s flagship stores, opened at 8 p.m. People waited the longest to get into the more well known retailers. Hundreds of people …

Many Bergen County shoppers opted for items left in stores after the door-buster deals were sold out
Friday afternoon saw a different breed of Black Friday shoppers at stores along Route 17 in Bergen County – the latecomers. Shoppers out in the afternoon said they weren’t missing the early morning (or in some cases, late night) door-buster deals. But, instead, were reaping the benefits of ongoing sales without the hassles of waking up early, waiting on long lines and fighting for merchandise. “I actually think it’s much better to wait until [Black Friday] afternoon,” Janine Iofrida, who was visiting Bergen County for the Thanksgiving holiday from NYC, said. She went to the Ramsey DSW with friend Donna Fitteron and her daughter Dara, of Franklin Lakes, at about 3 p.m. Friday. “By the time you wait on those long lines, what you wanted was …
Lines were the longest at Best Buy, H&M and Urban Outfitters at GSP in Paramus.
Despite Blue Laws restrictions that prevented Garden State Plaza from opening before 7 a.m., groggy shoppers gathered at the mall before dawn, most of them waiting for big ticket electronics at Best Buy. Customers waiting for door-buster deals on flat screen televisions and laptops showed up as early as 4 a.m., bundled in scarves and hats and gripping coffee cups. Best Buy had the longest lines, followed by H&M and Urban Outfitters, where a manager stood guard and let groups of people in at a time. The rest of the mall was busy, but lines were managable and moved quickly throughout the morning.
