Panel Looks For Long-Term Solutions To Lower Taxes

Several short-term solutions discussed at Tuesday’s meeting

The Mayor’s Blue Ribbon Advisory Panel is seeking both short-term solutions that will save the township money this year, and long-term ones that will allow for lower taxes in the future, Mayor Bill Laforet said at the group’s Tuesday night meeting. The panel of residents was assembled last month to make recommendations to the mayor as he and Mahwah’s Business Administrator and Chief Financial Officer are putting together the 2012 budget. The budget, which will determine Mahwah’s municipal tax rate this year, needs to be presented to the town council in February for approval. “We are looking for something different, an austerity spending plan that will have a significant impact on what people pay for their taxes,” Laforet said. “Our goal is…

Selling property ans assets is not not a way to reduce taxes but to lower our net worth and it is also a bad time to sell those off. The sale would only net a one time pittance to lower taxes. We need to decrease expenses that will be on an annual recurring basis or come up with a way to bring in a profit.   more ›

Mayor Asks Business Leaders In Mahwah To Help Plan Township Budget

Provident Bank VP will lead "Blue Ribbon Panel"

Mahwah’s new Mayor Bill Laforet says a “Blue Ribbon Panel” of business leaders from Mahwah he is compiling will help put together this year’s township budget. "We have people in our community who are CEO's, CFO's and very successful and accomplished businesspeople,” Laforet said in a release Tuesday. "We ask members of our community to contribute as volunteers in so many ways, but not from a business perspective. I see an opportunity for our entire community to benefit from the extra set of ideas that these folks will provide for us."
