Democratic Campaign Worker Charged With Swiping Campaign Signs

Washington DC man charged with theft after allegedly stealing Republican election signs from along Route 17. Allegedly tells police it was in retaliation for the theft of campaign signs for Senator Robert Menendez.

A Democratic campaign worker from Washington, DC was arrested in Mahwah early Tuesday morning after allegedly stealing Republican freeholder election signs from along Route 17, police said. Mahwah Detective Kevin Herbert and Officer Michael Blondin allegedly saw David Gins, who police said works for the Democratic Coordinating Campaign in New Jersey, removing a "Re-Elect Hermansen and Watkins" freeholder sign from the median at the intersection of Mountainside Road and Route 17 at about 12:40 a.m. Tuesday, Police Chief James Batelli said. When police approached Gins’s Chevy Traverse, they found eight more Hermansen-Watkins signs behind the drivers seat and a pile of re-elect Senator Menendez signs in the back of the car, Batelli said. POLL: Do You Want To See Election Signs In Mahwah?

Decision on a proposed law banning temporary signs on Mahwah roads was postponed again this week

The town council Thursday again postponed a decision on a months-long debate on whether or not to allow temporary signs, like political campaign signs, in the public right-of-way. The ongoing discussion about a proposed amendment to the current sign law came up as a reaction to the number of campaign signs lining the streets in last year’s election, and the anticipated number that would be put up this year from people running for local, county, state and national offices, township officials said. Currently, signs are only allowed in the right-of-way with special permission from the township council. However, at Thursday’s meeting, council …

"Safety Hazard" Campaign Signs Removed; Council Says It Will Change Sign Laws After Election

Administrative officer says signs he feels could cause an accident will be taken down

The town council decided Thursday to stick to the status quo after a couple of removed campaign signs prompted a public discussion on the township’s sign ordinance. The debate was sparked by the removal of mayoral candidate Bill Laforet’s campaign signs from the median on Macarthur Blvd., and differing interpretations of the ordinance that governs sign placement in the township. According to the township’s administrative officer, Gary Montroy, Mahwah’s sign ordinance is broken up into three parts – permitted, exempt, and prohibited signs. His interpretation of the ordinance is that a “prohibited” designation overrules the other two classifications. This means, he said, that certain signs need township permission to be put up, others are "…
