Scorching heat predicted across North Jersey, officials warn.
Four cooling centers have been opened around Bergen County as the heat index is expected to soar, officials said. The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Bergen County from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Heat coupled with humidity is expected to make it feel as hot as 104 degrees. Residents who need rides can call Community Transportation at (201) 368-5955. Judge and officer injured in falls; courthouse closed for remainder of the day, official says.
HACKENSACK - A 27-year-old New Milford man was arrested Monday after he broke a water pipe at the Bergen County Courthouse, causing significant damage and forcing the building to close for the remainder of the day, the sheriff’s office said. Benjamin Blohm was caught on camera kicking the third floor pipe until it broke, according to Bergen County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Richard Moriarty. Sheriff's officers reviewed security footage and arrested Blohm at the courthouse. Blohm was in the building for a drug court appearance, Moriarty said. A Superior Court judge and a sheriff’s officer slipped on the wet ground and were both treated for injuries, Moriarty said. The judge was taken to an area hospital, but his condition was not …

The former Lodi man who allegedly played a guiding role in the firebombings of Jewish synagogues earlier this year has pleaded not guilty to new charges that he conspired to kill the assistant prosecutor handling his case, authorities said Thursday. Aakash Dalal, 20, who had been attending Rutgers University and has a New Brunswick address, plotted to obtain a gun and murder Assistant Prosecutor Martin Delaney after he made bail, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said in a statement. Dalal, who was scheduled to be released from jail this week after arranging to post $1 million bail, was charged with conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to possess a weapon for unlawful purposes and terroristic threats. Court moved as part of effort to ease overcrowding at county justice complex.
The new location for Bergen County Central Municipal Court will open Tuesday in Hackensack, one step in a major renovation of the county’s justice complex. Officials will open the new location at 71 Hudson Street. The county has been renovating the building since last year. Central Municipal Court is unique to Bergen and generally handles summonses issued by county agencies. The busy court was located in the Bergen County Courthouse on Main Street. Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan has announced plans to rehabilitate the historic courthouse and surrounding justice complex. John L. Residents, community leaders call for justice after fatal shooting of unarmed black teenager.
More than 600 people donned hoodie sweatshirts and marched in Englewood Sunday to show solidarity with the family of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager who was shot dead by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Florida. The marchers traveled from Mount Calvary Baptist Church to MacKay Park in near silence to protest the killing. George Zimmerman, 28, told police he acted in self-defense when he gunned down the unarmed 17-year-old on Feb. 26. Zimmerman had called police to report Martin as looking suspicious. Former Bergen County Improvement Authority chairman Ronald J. O’Malley was sentenced to two years in prison Tuesday for a mortgage fraud scheme that falsely claimed mortgage borrowers worked at the county’s public financing agency, U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman said. O’Malley, 48, a principal in Ridgewood-based mortgage brokerage firm Diversified Financial Group, was also hit with a $25,000 fine imposed by U.S. District Judge Dennis M. Cavanaugh. O’Malley and his coconspirators arranged for phony paystubs and W-2 forms to show borrowers worked at the BCIA, federal prosecutors said.
