Mahwah Fields Remain ‘Unplayable’ from Sandy Damage

But, the township DPW says repairs will be made in time for the start of spring sports on April 1

More than three months after Hurricane Sandy brought down trees and debris throughout Mahwah, three of the township’s fields – Riverside Park in West Mahwah, Memorial Field at the corner of Airmount Road and Airmont Ave., and Continental Soldier’s Field – have post-storm damage that officials say could impact the upcoming spring sports season if it is not addressed. Wednesday night during a budget hearing, the township council verbally approved a $23,450 addition to the Department of Public Works 2013 budget so that it could fix the damage at the three township parks, which officials said resulted mostly from downed trees breaking fences and other parts of the fields. According to DPW Director Keith Hallissey, Riverside Park sustained the …

DPW: Sandy's Debris Worse than Record-Breaking Irene's

The DPW says it will be finished picking up leaves and brush from the storm by year's end; then it will begin clearing fallen trees from the superstorm

Mahwah is going to take about two weeks longer this year to pick up all of the leaves and brush piled at residents’ curbsides, but they say the delay is for a good reason. “The amount we’ve picked up this year is already more than what we had picked up by this point last year, and last year was more than ever before," thanks to Superstorm Sandy, Department of Public Works Director Keith Hallissey told Patch Wednesday. Leaf pick-up in the township generally begins in mid-October, and ends the second week in December, “finishing up the stragglers the week before Christmas,” Hallissey said. This year, he said he expects the pick-up of leaves and brush downed by Hurricane Sandy to wrap up by the end of the year. So far, Hallissey said a vast …

O&R WIll 'Listen Closely' To Resident Critiques Wednesday

The state Board of Public Utilities is holding a public hearing on the utility's response to Hurricane Sandy

Wednesday afternoon, residents and officials in Orange & Rockland’s service area will have the chance to share their feelings about the utility’s response to Hurricane Sandy at a Board of Public Utilities public hearing in Ramsey. According to O&R spokesman Mike Donovan, BPU hearings like this are common after major storms, and are happening with different power companies all over the state. “The format of this hearing calls for us to make a brief presentation, which we will,” Donovan said. But, “the hearing is set up to get the public’s input so the bulk of the hearing is devoted to testimony from customers.” He added, “We’ll be listening closely to what folks have to say.” Local officials say they will be giving the utility and the BPU, …

FEMA May Pay 75% of Mahwah's Sandy Cleanup Costs

But, the township needs to shell out the money first, then it will be reimbursed, officials said

Mahwah township officials say they are getting pretty good at asking the federal government for money to help pay for natural disasters. They did it twice last year, for the Halloween snowstorm and Hurricane Irene. “Fortunately, or unfortunately, we’ve had practice, so we know the process we have to go through,” Business Administrator Brian Campion said at a township council meeting Thursday night. "A FEMA representative will be assigned to Mahwah." He and other Mahwah officials are planning to meet with representatives from FEMA next week for initial discussions on Hurricane Sandy reimbursement, he said. “We are anticipating FEMA could cover 75% of our [cleanup] costs,” Campion said. However, he said the township is still calculating how …

Students Will Spend Part of President's Week, MLK Day in School

Board voted to add four school days back into the calendar to make up for days lost during Hurricane Sandy

A February President’s Day break originally scheduled to be five days long, has been knocked down to two. The Mahwah Board of Education Wednesday night voted unanimously to add the three days, Feb. 20-22, back into the 2012-13 school calendar to make up for days lost during and after Hurricane Sandy. Students will still have Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 18 and 19, off. The newly adopted calendar also adds in a full day of school on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Mahwah students already made up two of the lost six days during the canceled NJEA convention. So with the additional four days, the district will return to the same number of school days it had at the beginning of the year. The new calendar allows for three snow days. According to …

Comfort Suites Sued for Allegedly Price Gouging During Sandy

State Department of Consumer Affairs claims the Mahwah hotel charged over $200 for a $71 room during and after the hurricane

The Comfort Suites on Route 17 in Mahwah is one of ten New Jersey businesses being sued by the state for allegedly price gouging its rates during Hurricane Sandy. Governor Chris Christie, Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa, and the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs issued a joint release Wednesday announcing its second round of Sandy price gouging lawsuits. According to the release, the Comfort Suites, owned by Tapah, LLC, allegedly raised rates on its rooms by as much as 208% during and after the hurricane. The hotel allegedly overcharged customers on 473 occasions during the state of emergency, in at least one instance charging $219 for a room that cost $71.20 before the storm, the release said. “Safe, comfortable lodging is not a …

Mayor Thanks Community, Businesses for Response to Sandy

Send letters to the editor to jessica.mazzola@patch.com

To The Editor: Our community has just experienced what some would call the “Storm of the Century.” Many residents had no heat, no power, no food, restaurants had two hour waits, ready to eat meals were hard to come by in grocery stores, and long gas lines. Who would have thought that we could have a storm of this magnitude a second time in just over a year? But nothing stopped Mahwah!   I am so proud of the way our town came together. From making 3,500 sandbags, distributing soup and over 1,500 sandwiches all donated by local businesses, to the many pizza and pasta nights that were held; Trunk or Treat, Ramapo College warming center, churches, and temples, and of course Mahwah Elves and Plant Church who were amazing, and to the hundreds of…

Mahwah Woman Asks Locals to Send 'Love Notes' to Sandy Victims

The handwritten postcards will serve as unexpected pick-me-ups for those dealing with emotional fallout from the storm, she says

Though power has been restored, streets have been cleared of major debris, and residents are starting to remove downed trees and fix any physical damage left by Hurricane Sandy, one local woman is working on a project to ease the emotional burden left on those who lived through the storm. By day, Mahwah resident Jennifer Belthoff works for the Toys R Us corporate offices in Wayne, and as a server and bartender at Ramsey’s Chili’s restaurant by night. But her true passions, she says, are writing, and helping others. So, in her spare time she has put together a volunteer project called “Love Notes.” Her concept, she said, was simple – “I ask for volunteers and I pair them up randomly,” she said. “Then, I send them several writing prmpts over…
