Teachers will be added to grades and subject areas with the most need, board said
Students at the Lenape Meadows and Joyce Kilmer schools will meet new teachers next year. The Mahwah Board of Education approved the creation of seven new teaching positions at the schools at its last meeting. During the upcoming 2012-13 school year, the district will hire two new first grade teachers, one third grade and two special education teachers at Lenape Meadows. JK will see a new fifth grade teacher, new special education teacher, and the promotion of one current part time position in the special education department to full time. Earlier this year, the board approved a budget for the school year that allowed for 9.5 new positions to be added to the district’s roster. “At this point, we’ve got the approval of 7.5 new positions, so…

Students experience food, song, dance, history and culture from countries representative of the school's heritages during 'International Day'
Students at Joyce Kilmer celebrated each others’ cultures during a daylong International festivity last month. Each classroom was transformed into one of 12 different countries, and students experienced food, music, dance, history and culture of the other countries during the second annual ‘International Day.’ In preparation for the celebration, students were asked to contribute to a map pinpointing their heritages. “We wanted International Day to represent all of the cultures we have within our building,” JK Principal Michael DeTuro said. “This is a great opportunity for our students to become more familiar with each other and celebrate the diversity in our building.” Organized by the HSO, about 80 parents volunteered to put together the …

250 fifth graders get anti-drug course before entering middle school
About 250 fifth graders from Joyce Kilmer got a sneak peek at Ramapo Ridge Friday night during their graduation ceremony from the D.A.R.E., “Drug Abuse Resistance Education,” Program. Run by the Mahwah Municipal Alliance and taught to Mahwah’s students by Mahwah police officers, D.A.R.E. classes teach students skills that help them resist peer pressure to become involved with drugs, alcohol, violence and other risky behaviors. According to Mahwah Officer Joe Horn, an MMA member who coordinates the program, D.A.R.E classes are taught as part of the core curriculum to fifth grade students, during health classes to seventh graders, and during Driver’s Ed to tenth grade students. Each curriculum is geared to each age group. The MMA also “…

School officials say additional classes at Lenape and JK will help reduce class sizes
A group of Mahwah parents celebrated a victory this week when the township’s Assistant Superintendent of Schools announced new teachers will be hired in two Mahwah elementary schools in order to combat growing class sizes. Of the nine positions the board approved adding to the district’s payroll for the 2012-13 school year, four specific positions have been decided, Assistant Superintendent Janet Donohue said at Wednesday night’s meeting: two first grade teachers at Lenape Meadows, a third grade teacher at Lenape, and a fifth grade teacher at Joyce Kilmer. For the past several weeks, parent groups have attended board of education meetings to request additional classes in certain elementary grade levels. Board members told parents that …

Lenape Meadows evacuated Thursday due to a "minor gas leak;" Joyce Kilmer experienced a gas odor over the past several weeks
The Mahwah school district is installing gas detectors in all of its school buildings after the source of a persistent gas odor issue outside Joyce Kilmer was fixed this week, interim Superintendent Dr. Karen Lake said Wednesday night. Over the past several weeks, parents and staff members have been complaining of an odor of gas outside the school, in the parking lot and playground area located in between JK and the Center for Food Action building on Ridge Road, she said. Notes and emails sent to parents indicate that two separate issues were fixed by PSE&G over the past two weeks. JK Principal Michael DeTuro sent a note home January 11 saying the company fixed a “loose joint,” which alleviated the odor. When the smell returned, Lake said …

Annual Author Day could help kids prepare for NJ ASK, teachers say
Students at Joyce Kilmer got a good creative partner when writing creative stories last week, published children’s author Wendy Mass. The “Twice Upon A Time” fairtytale series author gave Mahwah’s fourth and fifth graders a writing workshop at JK’s annual “Author Day.” “What I did with the kids is exactly what I do when I am working on one of my books,” Mass, who has thirteen published titles under her belt, said. “I gave the kids the worksheet I fill out when I am working through characters and plotlines.” Students energetically filled out character profiles, and wrote the beginnings to short stories about a vague scenario Mass presented them with. All the while, the kids were able to ask Mass questions. At the end of the workshop, …

One vet given an "Operation Regognition" diploma
Mahwah veterans were honored at the Joyce Kilmer School this week in what Principal Michael Deturo said was an “amazing experience” for his students. "Everyone looks for heroes, and we are lucky to be in the presence of so many. This ceremony was a great way to make the meaning behind Veteran’s Day real and relevant for the kids,” he said. Fifth grade teacher William Howe, who put together a similar Memorial Day event at the end of the last school year, made the pioneering effort behind this event, Deturo said. He connected with Joan Garris at the High School, who heads a club of teens who honors vets. The result was a ceremony that simultaneously recognized and honored ten Mahwah veterans and their families and friends, and taught the …
