Mahwah Shot-Putter Named Junior Olympics ‘Athlete of the Year’

The 10-year-old competed in the Junior Olympics in three track & field events in 2012

A 10-year-old Mahwah track & field athlete had a big year in 2012. Anna Morris placed first in her regional and state competitions in shotput, triathalon and high jump, was invited for the second year in a row to compete in the Junior Olympics, and placed in the top ten in two events. Last month, Morris was named a 2012 USA Track & Field New Jersey Junior Olympic Athlete of the Year in the all-around category for her performances in multiple track & field events. Morris and her family went to a ceremony on Jan. 19 in Edison to receive her award. Morris has run track & field in the township’s rec program for several years. Mahwah's Mini Olympians Make Their Mark

Five kid athletes faced fierce competition at the Junior Olympics in Maryland

As residents have been fixated on watching trampoline, diving, swimming, track and field and beach volleyball Olympic competitions, Mahwah kids were experiencing the real heat of competition. Five members of the township’s rec track and field team returned last week from the Junior Olympics, held this year at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland. According to township track commissioner Pete Cassotis, every Mahwah competitor came in 20th place or higher in at least one event. “I sometimes think about going to the real Olympics one day,” Colette Petric, a 12-year-old who competed in the long jump and high jump, said. “This is a great experience because it gives you a taste for it.
