Letter to the Editor about one way to help this holiday season
Mahwah Patch, My name is Tom Potenza. I am a Mahwah resident and also the owner of TechLink. We are an IT staffing company located in Mahwah. I wanted to send this email to tell you about a holiday tradition that we have at my company. For the past ten years, my staff and I have bought Christmas presents for needy families. For the past three years, we have been working with the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation, and purchased presents for children with cancer, and for their siblings. The foundation provides us with a list which contains names of children, their ages, and some presents that the children wished for. My staff divides up the list and shops for the presents. We spend $50 per child and deliver the wrapped presents to the foundation …

Letter to Mahwah residents from the Center for Food Action director

Wednesday, November 14, 2012
Dear Friends, I want to thank you very much for the support that we at the Center for Food Action receive from you throughout the year. Our agency is seeing significant decreases in our monthly donations and increases in the number of families needing help with food as well as help with homeless prevention. These areas are our primary focus in servicing the community. As much as I love campaigning to help families with Department Stores gift cards, and relieving many of them from the stress of worrying about their needs for the holiday season, I must also be mindful that when they come to us for their monthly assistance that I am able to provide them with their basic food needs. I am saddened that I have to discontinue our department store…

The following are letters to the editor, submitted via email. Council President John Spiech Dear Mahwah Taxpayers, It is time once again (we did this just last year) to elect a Mayor. This time the Mayor-elect will serve a four year term. The next four years will be critical for all Taxpayers since it will be our dollars that will go to fund the expenses of the Town. Our current Mayor, Bill Laforet, was elected last year to fulfill the final year of Dick Martel’s four year term. Bill Laforet could have just sat quiet and probably won a four year term. Instead, being an astute business person, he quickly realized that the Township could not meet the State mandated 2% Budget Cap. With 35 years as a successful Businessman, he knew that he …

Letter about voting in the upcoming municipal election

The following three letters were submitted to the Mahwah Patch by Councilman Harry Williams: Mayor - Sinclair I address this letter to everyone like me who know and like both candidates for Mayor of Mahwah. Difficult as it may be, we must choose only 1 and perhaps my analysis will help you decide to vote for Ed Sinclair. This is not a choice of good or bad, experienced or not. Both are good men and both are newcomers to politics. Mistakes will be made regardless of the experience level. But this is precisely why we must consider the management style of Ed Sinclair and why it is the critical difference in the decision. Ed Sinclair’s style is reminiscent of our late Mayor Martel; inclusive, not dictatorial or manipulative. As did Dick Martel…

To Our Neighbors, A few weeks ago, Mayor Laforet, proposed to the town council the idea of outsourcing your DPW's recycling department. The amount of support we received from you, the residents, was, and still is, hard for us to comprehend. You stood by our side, and along with us, we were able to defeat this administration's attempt at privatizing your services....and for that, and from the bottom of our hearts...we say thank you! From, Your Mahwah DPW [Employees] -- Got a letter to the editor to submit to Patch? Email it to jessica.mazzola@patch.com.

Wednesday, July 11, 2012
Dear Editor, I feel strongly that no one should be allowed to make a profit at the expense of other people's health and safety. My primary concerns with the Crossroads mall proposal have been wondering what toxins will be released into our air and water when the contaminated soil is disturbed by construction, and how many people will be injured or killed due to increased traffic volume (33% according to the developer) and unsafe access to and from the proposed mall. After studying the developer's traffic plans I wrote the following letter to the NJ Dept of Transportation detailing dangers of their plans. Even if traffic volume remained exactly what it currently is the proposed mall access would still put drivers at risk. It was reported …

To The Editor, Too often, we, the hardworking taxpayers of Bergen County, have witnessed the abuses of government — double-dipping of public pensions, inflated salaries prior to retirements to boost pensions, cost over runs on projects, costly lawsuits on differences that should simply be settled by negotiations, unlimited overtime… The list goes on and on… We have all read the headlines and news stories of these abuses of the public trust. Day after day we watch with disgust as our tax dollars are wasted as we look to our elected officials to properly act on our behalf. Last year as a candidate for Bergen County Clerk, I raised one such issue of wasted tax dollars — the inflated cost of election printing by the Bergen County Clerk’s …

The Crossroads Town Center, a 600,000 square foot shopping center proposed to surround the Sheraton Hotel off of Route 17 in Mahwah, is in the middle of Planning Board public hearings. Last week, the hearings were postponed until mid-June, at the request of the developer. During the hearings, residents have brought up many concerns about the controversial shopping center, including the impact it will have on traffic to both highways and local roadways. A traffic expert has already testified in front of the planning board on potential impacts the development might create. Additional hearings on traffic are planned for future installments of the hearing. The following is a Letter to the Editor of Mahwah Patch: I am writing this letter to …

As far as the 2% cap - better talk to your tea and other party friends (who also are controlling the council) who are very vocal demanding 0% increases and even less and who, in the council, had the opportunity to change the budget. Sometimes you and I have to realize that the majority of residents (and council) members don't look that far ahead.   more ›
