Police say a Mahwah woman struck a concerned citizen who attempted to prevent her from leaving.
Witnesses say a Mahwah woman was chugging vodka in a Ridgewood gas station parking lot with a child in the car, and when good Samaritans tried to prevent her from fleeing, one man was run over. Stefanie Pennachio, 41, of Mahwah, was charged with leaving the scene, failure to report an accident, and reckless driving for her alleged role in the Monday afternoon incident. According to the police report, a witness said Pennachio pulled into the Exxon on the Run service station at about 5:30 p.m. drinking from a small glass bottle. Driver had finished his route and was returning to the FedEx base less than half a mile from where he crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer Monday night, police said
A FedEx truck driver who was about a quarter mile away from the end of his route Monday night suffered critical injuries after smashing his truck into a tractor-trailer on route 17 South in Mahwah, Police Chief Jim Batelli said. At about 8:05 p.m. Monday night, a flatbed tractor-trailer was pulling into the Pilot gas station on Route 17 when the FedEx truck traveling at “highway speed” hit its back right corner, Batelli said. The FedEx driver, Sean Sevasta, 26, of Suffern, N.Y. - who police said had no packages in his truck and was headed to the Fed Ex depot less than a mile down Route 17 - was pinned inside his truck, Batelli said. One year ago, longtime Mahwah resident and firefighter John Deming was killed in a car accident in NYS. At the time, his son, John Deming, Jr., was living across the country. Deming returned to Mahwah for his father's funeral, and has since relocated back to Mahwah to be closer to his family and childhood friends. Deming sent Patch the following memorial in honor of the first anniversary of his father's passing. On January 30 2012, Mr. John K. Deming, a resident of Mahwah since 1944, died in an auto accident. He was 73. Loved and Respected by Many. Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather. In the early 1960s, he started his own business, John Deming Welding & Cutting. Two tractor-trailers, two SUVs and a minivan were strewn across the highway Friday afternoon
Two Massachusetts women suffered minor injuries in a five-car accident involving one minivan, two SUVs and two tractor-trailers at the split of Routes 17 and 287 South Friday afternoon, Mahwah Police said. The two women were driving a red Toyota minivan off the NYS Thruway South at about 12:47 p.m. Friday when they “apparently decided too late they wanted to continue driving on Route 287 South, not Route 17,” responding Officer Bill Hunt said. The duo attempted to change lanes from the center lane, and grazed an SUV that was driving on 287 South, Hunt said. A Massachusetts man who burned over 60% of his body in a tractor-trailer accident on Route 287 North in Mahwah Tuesday night remained in critical condition Wednesday evening, Mahwah Police said. Clarence J. Belton, 64, of Chicopee, Mass., likely fell asleep at the wheel of his truck, or suffered from a medical condition that caused him to veer off the road at about 10:35 p.m. Tuesday, Mahwah Lt. Police warn drivers should avoid Route 17 for several hours
A tractor trailer that lost an axle while driving on the border of N.Y. and N.J. shut the right lane and shoulder of Route 287 North in Mahwah, and caused massive back-ups on Route 17 North in Mahwah and Ramsey Wednesday evening, police said. At about 4:10 p.m., an oversized tractor trailer lost all of its wheels on the right side, police said. Traffic on Route 17 North backed up about three miles or more, to at least the Franklin Turnpike exit in Ramsey. Mahwah Police sent out a Nixle alert to residents at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday saying drivers should expect extensive delays on Route 17 North for one to two hours, and avoid the area if possible. No other informaion about the accident was immediately available.

Postal truck kept driving and hit another car after carrier was thrown from it, police say
A postal worker was injured after he was thrown from the postal truck he was driving to the northbound lane of Island Road in a multi-car accident at about 4:45 p.m. Friday afternoon, Mahwah police said. According to police, a car pulling out of the State Line Diner hit a mail truck being driven by Milan Desai, 47, of Fair Lawn. “The force of the impact tore the door off the mail truck and [Desai] was ejected from his vehicle, landing in the northbound lane of Island Road,” Police Chief James Batelli said. The mail truck continued driving down the road on its own after the driver was ejected, Batelli said. A two-car accident in front of Mahwah Ford Tuesday morning resulted in a minor fuel spill and some minor injuries, Police Chief Jim Batelli confirmed. A Suffern woman suffered “minor chest injuries believed to be caused by [her] vehicle’s air bag deployment,” when her car collided with another on Franklin Turnpike, Batelli said. She was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital, he said. The gas tank in the other car, being driven by a Bergenfield man, “ruptured” as a result of the accident, causing an “extremely small gas spill,” Batelli said. Wayne resident has been charged with driving while intoxicated, police say.
A Wayne man cops say was drunk when he was flung 40 feet off his motorcycle in Mahwah early Sunday morning remained in intensive care Monday, Police Chief Jim Batelli said. Sidney Kirby Jr., 50, was transported to the Hackensack University Medical Center via Medevac after 12:39 a.m. Sunday, when his motorcycle crashed into a guardrail on the bend of Sparrowbush Road at Carlough Road in Mahwah, Batelli said. An investigation determined that Kirby lost control of his 2011 Harley Davidson as he approached the curve. He then hit the rail and was thrown 40 feet from his bike onto a nearby residential lawn, police said. Emergency responders cut off the roof of one car to remove woman trapped inside, authorities said
Two people suffered “serious injuries” Friday morning after a two-car collision on Airmount Road left one car crashed into a tree and the other into a telephone pole at the opposite sides of the roadway, Mahwah Police Chief James Batelli said. Beatrice Roberg, 85, of Montebello, NY, was traveling down Airmount Road at about 10:45 a.m. Friday when her car collided with another car coming off of Armour Road, Batelli said.
