Coach Jeff Remo says the moment was made even more special by his son, a player who secured Wednesday night’s win for the team
For Mahwah Varsity Baseball Coach Jeff Remo, every win is important. This Wednesday, his team not only celebrated a game victory against Fort Lee, but a milestone in their coach’s career. The 13-1 win against the Bridgemen marked Remo’s 100th career win as a baseball coach. Remo also recorded over 100 wins with the Mahwah Softball team when he coached that. “I don’t think you go into coaching with a specific goal of wanting to win a certain number of games,” he told Patch Thursday. “But, when you look back [at your coaching career], it’s definitely an accomplishment.” His 100th win was a family affair. Remo’s son, sophomore Ryan, was the closing pitcher during the Fort Lee game. “My son was the winning pitcher, that made it even more neat…

MHS baseball coach named 'Coach of the Year'
After a year of hard work and dedication, the two dozen high school students on the varsity baseball team, and their coach, have achieved something unprecedented in Mahwah history. Last week, the team beat Buena High School 11-4, clinching the 2012 NJSIAA Group 2 State Championship. It is the first time Mahwah has won a state championship in 53 years of Mahwah baseball. Since the win, the boys on the team have been taking it all in. They have an awards dinner Monday night, had breakfast with the HS principal, watched a sign about the accomplishment go up at school, and the mayor is planning to issue a proclamation recognizing the team’s accomplishment next month. The Bergen Record named the team the North Jersey Team of the Year, and …

Mahwah's varsity baseball team beat Madison in the Group 2 semifinals on Tuesday, according to NJ.com. The Thunderbirds beat the Dodgers 12-2, the website said. Mahwah had 14 hits and an error, while Madison recorded five hits and three errors, according to the box score. According to a NorthJersey.com baseball blog, the T-Birds are in a good position going into Saturday's Group 2 State Final game in Toms River. In 2008, the last time Mahwah made the finals, the team fell short of earning the state title. "I don’t know if a team can enter a state final any hotter offensively than Mahwah will enter Saturday’s showdown with Buena," the NorthJersey.com blog reported. "They’re averaging 10 runs in their last four games (which is very hard to …

11-0 no-hitter win was a team effort, coach says; Team preparing for North Jersey championships Tuesday
Mahwah’s Varsity Boys Baseball team has already achieved two major milestones this season. Earlier in the year, the boys won the Big North League Championship for the second year in a row, and with an 11-0 victory over Pequannock last Friday, they became the Group Two State Sectional Champs. The team, which has a 22-6 record this season, played “a great game,” head coach Jeff Remo said. Junior pitcher Chris Baldi pitched a no-hitter, which Remo called, “very rare, especially in the finals.” Catcher CJ Musemeci “had great hits, and did a nice job catching defensively,” he said. Remo credited a bunch of players with “really clutch hits” during the game, which allowed the T-Birds to rally such a high score. Junior Eric Kaplan, who leads the …

Event Saturday is meant to foster kids' interest in the rec baseball program, commissioner says
This year, Mahwah’s Annual Youth Sports Parade to ceremonially kick off the township rec program’s baseball and softball seasons is getting bigger. The event Saturday has grown from a morning parade for the program’s youngest players to a daylong event that includes competitions, clinics, potato sack races, a dunk tank, and other events for the older kids in the program. The celebration will end with a coaches’ game Saturday evening. “As kids are getting older, some are losing interest in playing baseball,” the program’s commission Joe Woelfel said. “We are coming up with ways to keep them more involved and engaged, so we thought a big blow-out celebration would be something players could look forward to.” Woelfel, who is entering …
