The community welcomed Mary Ann’s Gourmet Market with a ribbon cutting ceremony this weekend
The owners of Mary Ann’s Gourmet Market, a new gourmet deli that officially opened in the Ramapo Centre this weekend, say the shop is exactly what they imagined it would be. With a deli, salad bar, prepared foods, eat-in tables, take-out options, a marketplace filled with local foods, and a bakery, Mahwah residents and owners Michael and Maria Flynn say they are excited for locals to come in and get to know the new shop. “So far, so good,” Maria Flynn said of how business has picked up since the market’s soft opening on April 26. “The community seems to be slowly learning about us, and we have the support of our family and friends, which means so much.” Mary Ann’s is a first for the Flynns. Michael, who says his family has lived in the …

Arden Jewelers is asking for community members' input about what types of jewels they’d like to see in the store
Mahwah is poised to get a new jewelry store in the next few weeks, and the owner says he’d like feedback from the community on what jewels locals are looking for. Arden Tirpanciyan, a Paramus native who graduated from Ramapo College, said he’s worked for most of his life in his family’s wholesale jewelry business in NYC. Last year, he decided he wanted to explore a different aspect of the business. “I really wanted to go into business for myself, and I like the idea of getting that direct connection with the customer,” Tirpanciyan said. "Plus, jewelry is my passion." When deciding where to open his first store, Arden & Co. Jewelers Diamond and Watch Boutique, Tirpanciyan said Mahwah kept jumping out to him as a perfect place. “I think …

Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno was in the township Monday to help welcome the planned 195,000-square-foot corporate campus to New Jersey
Dozens of corporate officers met with local and state politicians to officially break ground on a new headquarters that is planned to open in Mahwah in 2014. According to officials from Dress Barn, and its parent company Ascena – which owns and operates 3,800 stores across the country – the company felt the old Footstar building on Macarthur Boulevard would be the perfect spot for the company to call its new home. Dress Barn’s execs, NJ Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno and Mahwah Mayor Bill Laforet donned hardhats and held golden shovels Monday morning to ceremonially break ground at the site, which has already started undergoing the company’s planned $38.5 million renovation of the space. “It just felt like this could be our own little …

Mary Ann’s Gourmet Market will move into the former Mahwah Bagels and Gourmet, which has been empty since last July
It’s been about eight months since Mahwah Bagels and Gourmet was evicted from its spot in the Ramapo Centre shopping complex on Macarthur Boulevard. The eatery was the third vacancy in the center, and one local entrepreneur says he is eager to fill it. Mike Flynn – a 22-year career chef who spent the last decade working as the sous chef at the Indian Trail Club in Franklin Lakes – said he wants to open his first business close to home. “I live right next door, I could really walk to the store in about three minutes,” the 12-year resident said. “My daughter is a student at the Ridge, she’s gone to three schools up and down this road so far. My wife and I knew we wanted to open a business in Mahwah, in our community.” Flynn said he is …

Survey found about 5% of the stores on Route 17 in Mahwah are vacant
Retail on Route 17 in Mahwah has been a big topic of discussion in the township since the proposal for the Crossroads Town Shopping Center came up in 2011. The controversial proposal is seeking to build a 600,000 square foot shopping center, which includes a movie theater and two big box stores, near the Sheraton Mahwah Hotel. More recently, the township’s newly approved Master Plan suggested big box stores not be built along Route 17. Instead, the document recommends improving the landscaping, aesthetics, and signage at future retail developments along the highway. It also suggests enhancing the visual impact of Route 17 by creating a unified design theme. And, according to a new survey released this week by the Goldstein Group, Route 17 …

Route 17 in the two towns was named a ‘Strong Retail Corridor' in Northern NJ
The Mahwah-Ramsey stretch of Route 17 is one of the strongest retail corridors in Northern and Central NJ, according to an analysis of the state’s retail real estate market released by the Goldstein Group Monday. Twice a year, the real estate brokerage firm surveys 22 retail corridors in Northern and Central New Jersey, which amounts to over 98 million square feet of retail space. According to a release from the survey, the Mahwah-Ramsey stretch of Route 17 has a relatively low vacancy rate, just above 5%. The survey named the stretch one of the “strongest retail markets with the lowest availability rates” in the region. Overall, the group found a stagnant 7.8% vacancy rate in the retail corridors examined at the end of 2012, about the …

After six months in business, the chain salon says it is fulfilling a need in the community
There are six Supercuts locations within a 10-mile radius of Mahwah. But, according to managers at the salon on Franklin Turnpike, its first six months in business have set it up to be one of the busiest Supercuts in the region. According to Lisa DelVescovo, the district leader for 15 Supercuts locations throughout northern New Jersey, the Mahwah location has been her busiest. “The response [from the community] has been great,” she said. “Business has been steadily growing, and compared with other Supercuts, the ramp up here has been quicker.” One of the reasons for the good response, she said, is that the salon “filled a need and a demand here for the price point we offer. There are a lot of high-end salons in the area, but we are known …

Shake & Sizzle closed its doors in December. What would you like to see replace it?
A retro-style burger joint that opened its doors in the summer of 2011 is no more. Shake & Sizzle, which was one of two restaurant in the Gateway Center on Franklin Turnpike, closed in the middle of December 2012. Though Eric Levy, the property manager for the building, said he could not comment on why the restaurant closed, he said it was the owner’s decision to shut down. “Of course we were disappointed that it didn’t work,” Levy said. Shake & Sizzle went through a redesign about a year after it initially opened to the public. The restaurant was the first tenant to move into the space at 3 Franklin Tpke. since the Gateway Center opened in late 2009. But, Levy said his company is not being too sentimental about the restaurant’s closing. …

The running specialty franchise is owned by two township residents
Mahwah residents Joe and Jill Glotzbier say they were looking for a professional change when they decided to open a new franchise in the township – Fleet Feet, a running store they officially opened in November of 2002. “I was coming from 28 years of corporate life,” Joe told Patch this week. “I had always wanted to own my own business, and this seemed like the right change.” Glotzbier, who played hockey in college, said he had always been a running enthusiast. “I always thought there was a void here, a need for a real running specialty store,” Glotzbier, who moved to Mahwah with his wife and young daughter in 1992, said. Especially, he said, since the natural surroundings of “Bergen County’s Parkland” fosters a perfect environment for …

Tell Patch readers which businesses helped get you through Sandy, and which battled power outages for longer than most
For a large group of Mahwah businesses, Monday marks an uneasy anniversary. It’s been two weeks since Hurricane Sandy knocked out their power, and only one week since its been restored. Many local business owners say they are still recovering from the week of lost business. As power outages lingered throughout the township, many businesses in Mahwah opened extra hours and accommodated big crowds following the storm. Businesses in Fardale, and in the shopping complex on Macarthur Boulevard, couldn’t do that. “It still isn’t normal yet,” Jeff Mockler, owner of Mahwah Wine and Liquors, said Friday. “I have distributors who were totally wiped out, so I’m selling what I have. Shipments are also being delayed.” Mockler said he didn’t think he’d …

I have tried out this new deli a handful of times not and the biggest concern is with the inexperienced help behind the counter. They appear to have no working knowledge of waiting on people and no personalities. The Owners are nowhere to be seen. They should be behind the counter waiting on their new customers and welcoming them as if it is their new home. They will put themselves out of …   more ›
