In an email to members over the weekend, the group said it will likely reform again one day in the future
In light of last November’s presidential election, the Mahwah Tea Party announced this week it will, at least temporarily, disband. In an email sent Saturday from the organization’s founders and officers to its members and online followers, the Tea Party announced its future in Mahwah is uncertain. “We have been rather quiet since the November election. We have been at times disturbed, disappointed, and even angry, as you probably have felt also,” the email said. “The fact that 60 million Americans voted against our position underscored how far this country has moved to the Socialist left.” President Obama’s victory, as well as the victory of Democrats in state and county elections, was troubling to the group, the email said. “Republicans …

During a swearing in ceremony Thursday night, officials who won November's contentious election spoke of mending Mahwah's political atmosphere
The message from Mahwah government officials sworn into new roles at a reorganization meeting Thursday night was pretty unanimous – the election is over, and the winning politicians and residents need to work together in order to accomplish anything in 2013. The winners of November’s municipal election – incumbent mayor Bill Laforet, incumbent council members Lisa DiGiulio and John Roth, and newcomer Steve Sbarra – were officially sworn into their posts by Judge Anthony Gianni Thursday night. Laforet was sworn in for a four-year term after serving a one-year term he won in a special election last year to finish out the term started by late Mayor Richard Martel, who died in March 2011. Thursday night, Laforet said tensions that have risen …

The majority of Mahwah voters did not agree with the county, state and country's choices
In the county, state and federal elections held Tuesday, the choices made by a majority of Mahwah voters did not match up with those made by the rest of the voter base. From offices ranging from the President of the United States to some local races, Mahwah residents tended to favor the losers of the elections. According to the unofficial tallies of Mahwah votes released by township clerk Katherine Coletta Friday, the majority of Mahwah voters chose the losing candidate in most non-local elections. For president, Mahwah voters favored the Romney-Ryan ticket over Obama-Biden, 6,299 votes to 4,688. The state and the country voted for Obama. In the presidential race, the third highest vote-getter in Mahwah was Libertarian candidate Gary …

See all Mahwah's local election results - DiGiulio and Roth win reelection to the council; two candidates separated by only 37 votes for the third council seat
While Mahwah’s mayor-elect Bill Laforet said he was “honored and humbled” to accept the top job in the township for four more years Tuesday night, his focus Wednesday will not be celebrating his victory, he said. “The town is in crisis mode right now, and my work [on Hurricane Sandy relief] won’t be done until every resident’s power is restored,” Laforet said at a victory party Tuesday night. “I’m back on the job first thing [Wednesday] morning.” Orange & Rockland is reporting over 1,400 Mahwah residents are still without power over a week after Hurricane Sandy hit the east coast. More than 9,000 lost power during last Monday's storm. Laforet easily won reelection to a four-year term as mayor, according to unofficial results counted at …

Dear Editor, I am writing to voice my support to re-elect John Roth to the Mahwah Town Council. John Roth has served us very well during the past 8 years, and we will continue to need his experience, dedication and management skills as we face important and complex issues in our community during these difficult economic times. This is a very important election year in Mahwah because we will be electing a new Mayor, and 3 candidates for the Town Council. As a result, we will need the stability of John’s experience, dedication and fairness on our Council, more than ever, in order to preserve the quality of life and the Town services that we have enjoyed in Mahwah. John has seriously been involved in Mahwah for almost 20 years. He has …
