The fire broke out Monday afternoon in a parking lot on the campus of Lincoln Tech.
A dumpster fire that broke out Wednesday afternoon in a steel, 30-yard dumpster located in a parking lot outside Lincoln Tech was likely started by bottlerockets thrown in the oversized trash bin, authorities said. The dumpster was full of refuse and its contents were engulfed in flames when firefighters from Company 2 arrived on scene shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, according to Mahwah Fire Chief Ed Garza. The large dumpster was stationed in the back corner of the parking lot across the street from the school building, he said. Bottle rockets were responsible for starting the fire, according to Police Chief Jim Batelli. “Officer Michael Blondin, who is our arson investigator, determined that the fire was started by shooting …

A fire that started in a service van quickly spread to a home on Swan Road in Mahwah, officials said
A Mahwah family was relocated Tuesday afternoon after a fire destroyed a portion of their Swan Road home, fire officials said. According to Mahwah Fire Chief Ed Garza, the right side of the home, including the garage, closet, master bedroom and portion of the house’s roof, are “pretty much gutted out. Those rooms are totally damaged.” The damage was contained to the right side of the house, he said. According to Police Chief Jim Batelli, an electrician installing a generator in the house had parked in the driveway near the home’s garage. After 1 p.m., he heard a popping noise, and saw that his van was fully engulfed in flames, Batelli said. The fire spread from the van to the garage, officials said. Only the electrician was in the home at …

Mahwah family lost its home, possessions, and dog in a fire earlier this month
Mahwah residents gathered at the Elks Lodge Sunday morning for pancakes, syrup, fruit cups and other breakfast foods served by the township's firefighters. The MFD has been working all month long to collect donations and raise money for a Mahwah family that lost its home in a fire on Jan. 2. Residents gathered to enjoy the breakfast and help the family Sunday morning. The MFD Fundraiser Committee released a statement thanking the community for supporting the event: “We were thrilled with the outcome which exceeded our expectations and were overwhelmed by the support shown from our community as well as others during a family’s time of great need. Our fire department members should also be proud of the hard work they put into this event. We’…

The MFD is hosting a pancake breakfast Sunday to benefit the township family that lost its house in a fire
Since a fire broke out at their Stag Hill home Jan. 2, Roger Mann, his wife Becky and their three kids have been relying on help from the community to recuperate from an astounding loss. The family’s house was completely destroyed. “By the time we got there, it was already fully involved,” Ken Warnet, a Mahwah firefighter who responded to the house fire, said. “As a firefighter, the most discouraging thing you can see is a homeowner standing on the lawn with a look of total despair as he watches his house burn down.” None of the items left in the house were salvageable, firefighters say. And, the fire claimed the life of the family’s dog. “They really lost absolutely everything,” Warnet said. “It was completely devastating. They have to re…

Dear Mahwah Patch, As you know, Mr. Roger Mann and his family suffered from a tragic fire a couple weeks ago, and was then robbed of what little they had left. Now they are [trying] to recover. As members of the student council, we refused to just sit idly by and let our neighbors in Mahwah suffer alone, so we took action. Over the past month, the Mahwah High School Student Council worked diligently to raise money, asking each representative to bring in money from their families and the families of their classmates. Through constant fundraising, we were able to donate $400 to Mr. Mann and his family, who said that this money would go directly towards his new house. Sincerely, Barbara Fernicola, Student Council Advisor Submit letters to the…

Burglars stole some of the only items a Mahwah family had left, police said
Mahwah Police have recovered most of the tools stolen from a family that lost its house in a fire, Chief Jim Batelli said this week. Following up on a tip from a local resident, the MPD found most of the thousands of dollars worth of tools that were stolen last weekend from a shed that was left standing near a Stag Hill home that burned to the ground earlier this month, Batelli said. Most of the stolen tools, which included two chainsaws, a table saw, a circular saw and other tools, were found Monday, not far from the Mountain Road home, Batelli said. All of the items of significant value that were stolen were found, police said. The Bergen County Bureau of Criminal Investigation processed the found tools, and dusted them for fingerprints…

Take your pick - an evening Tricky Tray and Dance and a Sunday Pancake Breakfast will both raise funds for the Mann family
Several weeks after a Mahwah family lost its home in a large fire that broke out at the top of Stag Hill, members of the community continue to set up fundraisers and events to help the family recouperate from their loss. Mark your calendars for two upcoming events to help the Mann family. The first, happening this Friday evening, is an event being hosted by Becky Mann’s employer, The Rainbow Academy in Mahwah. “Becky works at Rainbow Academy, she is a long time employee and part of our family,” RA Director Kim Cafferata said. So, the early education center decided to help. This Friday, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., local families are invited to stop by the Academy for a night of Tricky Tray raffles, a DJ, dancing, games, and pizza, drinks and baked…

Stop by the Lia Sophia event next week at the Ramapo Reformed Church to pick up some jewelry and donate to the Mann family
Mahwah resident Michelle Ketendjian is using her business to help raise money for her friends Roger and Becky Mann, who lost their home in a fire earlier this month. The Lia Sophia jewelry advisor said after the fire, she felt she could use her position to both list the family’s spirits and raise money for them to continue to rebuild after the fire. “I have been friends with Becky and Roger since my nephews started wrestling with their sons in 2010,” Ketendjian said. “My husband coached their son in football for a year. My brother in-law and my husband also coach both boys in wrestling every year. Now, the Manns have become such great friends of ours that I call their daughter Destiny my ‘niece.’” Ketendjian, who has been a Lia Sophia …

As a LTI graduate I can say, there are two kinds of people who attend LTI. Those who are serious about their future in their chosen career field, who act with professionalism, and those who do very little in class and then end up doing stupid things like this. Honestly, I think the profs and admins at LTI are a bit too lenient and should really make an example out of the guys who did this.   more ›
