Mahwah Police are looking for a person or group of people who stole thousands of dollars in tools from a shed left standing next to the remnants of a township home that burned to the ground last week, authorities said Wednesday. Police Chief James Batelli called the burglars, who police say broke the lock on the shed to steal tools the family had inside it, “people of very questionable character, to take the few belongings this family has left.” According to police, Roger Mann – who recently thanked the community for its support after the fire - returned to his Stag Hill home Sunday night after a family member noticed the lock on the family’s shed next to the home had been cut off. Between the floods of phone calls, texts, and Facebook messages of support and concern, to the clothes, gift cards, and other generous donations and offers that have been coming in, so many people have reached out in so many ways and touched our hearts beyond belief. To know we're not alone in this and to have so many people that care lets us know we are blessed. If it wasn't for all of you, we don't know how we would be making it through this. We can't begin to tell you how grateful we are …

Police say they are still investigating the cause of last week's fire, but renovation work is no longer believed to be the culprit
A fire that destroyed six condominium units in the Society Hill complex off Ridge Road last Wednesday may have started as an electrical fire, Mahwah Police Chief Jim Batelli said Monday. Police believe the fire was started accidentally, he said. “We no longer believe the fire started as a result of any renovation work that was ongoing in either of the two empty units,” as was considered after initial investigations last week, Batelli said. “We believe that cause of the fire was electrical in nature,” he said, declining to elaborate. Police confirmed the fire is not being investigated as a suspicious fire, but said the investigation into what started the blaze is still ongoing. No residents were hurt in the fire, which completely destroyed six Society Hill condo units and partially damaged ten others, authorities said. One Mahwah firefighter was transfered to Valley Hospital during the fire to be treated for minor burns. "…

Mahwah FD knocked down brush fire likely caused by a lightning strike
Mahwah firefighters responded to a brush fire that authorities say could have easily gotten out of hand if not for a swift response. A fire broke out in the brush and bushes behind a Victoria Lane home at around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Assistant Fire Chief Brad Stio said. The fire was “probably caused by lightning,” he said. The swift-moving fire “ignited almost up to the deck” at the rear of the house, Stio said. “It could have [easily] turned into a structure fire but Company 4 arrived quickly to knock down the fire.” Mahwah Fire Companies 1, 2 and 4 responded to the blaze. Earlier during the thunderstorms, the FD and MPD responded to a transformer fire on Route 17, also likely caused by lightening. -- Follow Patch on Facebook and Twitter. …
