If you’re still feeling bummed about missing the Powerball jackpot, a raffle in Mahwah with much better odds of winning might ease the blow. A brand new 2013 Audi Q5 is up for grabs, and Mahwah residents have a one in 699 chance of winning it in this year’s Mahwah Municipal Alliance car raffle. The annual raffle raises money for the MMA and its programming. The non-profit organization is made up of volunteer police officers, business owners, and community members, and runs programming for students in the township, like DARE, the Junior Police Academy, and the Youth Leadership Academy. The police and MMA-run programs start this July
Mahwah’s Junior Police and Youth Leadership Academies will be back this year, and online registration for the popular summer programs will begin Monday at 12 noon, the Mahwah Municipal Alliance announced last week. According to a release from MMA members Mayor Bill Laforet, Police Chief Jim Batelli, and President Carolyn Blake, the JPA will be held this year from July 8 – 19, and the YLA from July 29 – August 2. The two academies will be offered for the same prices they were last year, $225 for the JPA - a day camp for students entering 6th grade next September - and $275 for the YLA - a 5-day sleep away leadership camp for students entering the 8th through 12th grades. Seminar at Mahwah High School is being billed as '90 minutes that could save your child's life'
The Mahwah Municipal Alliance and Mahwah High School are co-sponsoring a program for township parents this Thursday about teen drug use. The seminar, ‘Defending Your Teen,’ is happening this Thursday, March 7, at 7 p.m. at Mahwah High School. According to the MMA, the presenter, Tim Shoemaker, is a nationally acclaimed presenter on the ‘teen drug scene,’ who will share with parents techniques on how to “protect [children] from the dangers of drug abuse.” According to a Mahwah Police presentation during a township budget hearing last month, juvenile delinquency complaints and arrests in Mahwah were up in 2012. Last year saw 29 drug-related cases in which minors were involved, and 12 alcohol-related cases in which juveniles were implicated, …

The Mahwah Municipal Alliance and Mahwah Police Department sponsored the second annual Spirit of Christmas Food Drive on Sunday, Dec. 23, at Mahwah Police Headquarters. The MMA was assisted by athletes from the winter wports programs at Mahwah High School. Throughout the day residents and athletes donated non-perishables food items which will be donated to the Center for Food Action in Mahwah. More than four vans full of food were collected and delivered to the CFA. The participation of student athletes demonstrates the commitment athletes and students have to helping our community. An award-winning adolescent psychologist is coming to Mahwah to tell parents their teens are crazy, and offer ideas on the best ways to navigate parenting teens in a 21st Century world. Dr. Mike Bradley is a Bucks County, Penn.-based psychologist whose 2002 book, Yes, Your Teen is Crazy!: Loving Your Kid Without Losing Your Mind, attempts to guide parents through issues like sex, violence, drugs, alcohol, easy access to guns, and other issues today’s teens face. Debbie Messina bought just one raffle ticket
A Mahwah mom trying to support one of her daughter’s interests just picked up a sweet ride. Resident Debbie Messina was the winner of the 2012 Mahwah Municipal Alliance Mercedes Benz Raffle. Messina bought one $100 ticket, and won a Mercedes-Benz GLK 350, worth a cool $43,000. “I actually bought the ticket at the last minute,” Messina said. “I buy one ticket every year because my daughter was in the DARE Program, and this year was in the [MMA's] Youth Leadership Academy and she loves it.” After purchasing her ticket, Messina went to the Jersey Shore and “basically just thought, ‘no one ever wins these things.’” After returning home from the trip, Messina still didn’t realize she had won the raffle. “One of my daughter’s friends called to …

Program run by Mahwah police officers for township students is the only one of its kind in the tri-state area, organizers say
The 198 Mahwah students who graduated from the 2012 Youth Leadership Academy Friday afternoon were part of what Mahwah Sgt. Rob Curtis called the biggest, “most extraordinary,” group of graduates the program has seen yet. The YLA, a 5-day sleep-away leadership academy held each summer at Ramapo College, is run by Mahwah Police Officers through the Mahwah Municipal Alliance. Throughout the academy, participants are broken into teams who compete in 10 challenges that Curtis said tests their abilities to problem solve, work together and lead one another. Each year, the participants also complete a capstone project. This year, students ran a used shoe drive to benefit the Nike Reuse-a-Shoe program, which grinds up old sneakers and reuses the …
