Les Paul Friends Returning to Mahwah for Talk on Inventor

Reservations are required to see Bucky Pizzarelli and Ed Laub share stories about the Mahwah guitar virtuoso

Nationally renowned guitarists, Bucky Pizzarelli and Ed Laub, recently visited the Mahwah Museum to play Les Paul’s Sunburst 1937 Gibson L-7 Acoustic Guitar. The guitar from Les Paul’s personal collection is on display at the Museum. Loaned to the Museum by a local collector—this instrument was the first experimental one used by Les Paul in his quest to perfect the electric guitar. Although an acoustic guitar -- which ordinarily needs no amplification – the wood body of the guitar contains holes into which Paul placed phonograph needles to experiment with amplification. Bucky Pizzarelli, a long-time resident of Upper Saddle River, is widely known for bringing Les Paul out of his self-imposed retirement in the 1970’s. Originally performing …

Know of another place to take the kids?

The Mahwah Museum will be open to residents Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Museum Director Tom Dunn said the museum has power, and might be a fun stop for families looking for something to do during Halloween week. It is a good stop “for people who are getting cabin fever,” Dunn said. A number of stores and restaurants in the township have also opened their doors to customers. See a running list here. Know of another spot to take the kids who are upset that Halloween is postponed and are getting cabin fever? Tell us in the comments.

Mahwah Museum Archives Get Boost From $5K State Grant

Grants the museum got this year will help support private research and projects like Ramapo Reformed Church history archiving

The Mahwah Museum will continue to be open for private historical research, thanks to a $5,000 grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission. The grant, announced by the Governor’s Office this week, is part of $2.3M in support grants given to historical associations throughout the state to help with operating costs during 2013. The grant is the second part of a two-year cycle, Mahwah Museum Director Tom Dunn said. The money will be used to pay a part-time administrative aide who keeps the museum open for private research appointments during the week, Dunn said. “[We] make the Museum available for research, by appointment, on local history. Currently the Museum office is staffed on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-2 p.m., even though the …
