Over 1,000 toys were collected in Mahwah, police say
Lines are never good. But these lines are particularly bad. You will not find them in toy stores or in malls. These lines are the pathways carved by unimaginable agony, yet tell a story of unceasing hope and incredible faith. These are the lines that map the faces of parents afflicted with the anguish of watching over, and caring for, their seriously ill children. Now in its 24th year, the Santa Response Team, organized by Closter police sergeant Don Nicoletti and consisting of PBA members from all over North Jersey, has brought Santa to Hackensack University Medical Center's Joseph M. Sanzari Children's Hospital and Tomorrows Children to deliver Christmas to the children and families who occupy every pediatric floor--from oncology to …

You can help sponsor participants
This weekend, about 15 Mahwah police officers are getting down and dirty for a good cause. For the second year in a row, Mahwah PBA Local 143 members will be participating in the “Tough Mudder” competition to raise funds for the Wounded Warrior Project, which helps rehabilitate wounded veterans. According to PBA President Gerry Falotico, the 12-mile, 19-obstacle course was “[c]reated by British Special Forces [and] the event is to challenge mental/physical toughness while fostering camaraderie.” The course is designed to be intense and challenging, according to the Tough Mudder website. Only about 78 percent of participants finish the race. “For us, it’s a great experience because it’s something that we can all do together, and the Wounded…

Blood drive in honor of late firefighter this Sunday
This is a “great weekend to be in Mahwah,” according to Mahwah firefighter Pam Drozd, who is co-chairing Sunday’s Fire Co. 1 Blood Drive, Food Drive and Open House. The event, happening from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Company 1 station on Franklin Turnpike, is in honor of Pam’s late husband, Mahwah firefighter and Fire Inspector Mike Drozd, who died in a 2008 accident. Pam said the FD renamed the drive that year to honor Mike. “They asked me what event would make the most sense to name in his honor, and I requested the blood drive. He always donated, and this is something that really benefits the whole community. No matter how much blood they collect, it helps somebody,” Pam said. The blood collected at the drive will benefit Community Blood…
