The people of Newtown, Conn., are “no different than the people of Mahwah,” Mayor Bill Laforet told a crowd of over 100 residents who gathered in the Mahwah High School auditorium to pray for the victims of Friday’s school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Three days after a gunman killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., residents in Mahwah, NJ – less than a two-hour drive from the Connecticut town – are looking to honor the lives lost in the tragedy. Several Mahwah firefighters traveled to the funeral of Daniel Barden in Newtown yesterday. Daniel wanted to be a fireman when he grew up. Word was put out and firefighters from New Jersey to Boston gathered in Newtown and gave him the full honors of a firefighter funeral. Daniel was 7. more ›
