The Group 2 state championship game is Monday afternoon
The Mahwah Boys Soccer Team is one game away from a state title. Last week, the team got past two viable opponents – Kittatinny, which the T-Birds beat 3-1 in the quarterfinal game, and Lakeland, which the team beat 2-1 in overtime in the semifinals last Thursday. Mahwah, seeded #2 in the Group 2 State Tournament Championship, will take on the Number 4 seed, Newton, is the finals at home Monday at 2 p.m. According to nj.com, Mahwah is going into the final game with a 17-1 record, Newton with a 20-4 record. Last week, Thunderbirds coach Vince Vespe said he felt the team was strong, and could win the whole tournament. The photos above are from the semi-final game against Lakeland last week. Mahwah beat Kittatinny 3-1 Monday
Mahwah High School’s boys varsity soccer team is two games away from clinching the Group 2 State Tournament Championship, and the team seems poised for the challenges that lie ahead. The T-Birds beat Kittatinny 3-1 in the state quarterfinal game Monday afternoon. “These kids work hard, and they play soccer year round,” Coach Vince Vespe said. Monday, “they played well, again.” According to their coach, the team has been playing well together all season. The team of 21 has 16 senior members, and a 17-1 record. Monday’s game was the second in the state tournament. Mahwah beat Glen Rock 2-1 in the first round game Saturday. The team will play a semi-final game Thursday. “We are going into the [semi-finals] confident,” Vespe said. “We feel …

Recognition has nothing to do with track and field
For Mahwah High School student Andrew D’Angelo, a discus is not just a heavy disc used at track and field competitions. The senior has been named one of the national ‘Discus Award’ winners, a recognition that gets him a college scholarship. According to the award committee, Andrew, and other award winners across the country, were chosen not only for academic accomplishments, but for being “hungry for a different kind of success.” The awards look at ten considerations when choosing winners – academics, arts, athletics, community service, faith, government, green, technology, and other accomplishments. For Andrew, soccer is his passion. “I like soccer because it’s a thinking game,” the Mahwah goalkeeper said. “You need to predetermine what …

Boys soccer team plays county quarterfinal game Sunday
The Thunderbirds suffered a disappointing 3-1 loss Sunday in the county tournament's quarterfinal round game against Old Tappan. The boys soccer team went into the “Elite 8” round of the tournament with a well-deserved confident attitude. “We’ve been playing together since we were U8,” said junior Adam Reckseit. “We’ve got good team unity and we all know what each one of us is going to do on the field.” “This is the best the team has done in a while. Two years ago, we only had three wins, last year we had 12, and now we are 9-3-2 so far,” Andrew D’Angelo added. The team is also preparing for the state tournament that starts the first week of November. The boys attributed the improvement to an increased commitment level of all of the …

Girls bond on and off the field
Last year’s state championship soccer team is no more. The Mahwah girls varsity soccer team is made up of a completely different group of players, but that doesn’t mean their goals, or their attitudes, are any less. “We are definitely more of an underdog this year, but that’s fine,” said senior captain Molly Cohan. “We want to prove everyone wrong.” The girls are going into the quarterfinal game of the county tournament on Sunday. They will take on Northern Highlands, the top seeded school in the tournament that has an undefeated record so far this season. Mahwah, the ninth seed, has an 8-3 record. “We bring out the best in each other, and our playing styles compliment one another,” said junior Kiersten Spencer. “I don’t know if anybody is…

What to expect from the girl's soccer team this year
Last year was the perfect ending to a perfect season. The Lady T-birds captured not only the North I Group II sectional title, but they went on to win the state Group II title as well, a remarkable feat. This year, the team is relying on a small group of seniors to help the younger players along. With a group that has been around the winning culture for the past few years, look for this team to further develop as the year goes on and be ready to make some noise once again come playoff time. Upcoming Schedule 9/13 Tuesday- vs. River Dell 6:00 pm 9/15 Thursday- @ Bergenfield 4:15 pm 9/20 Tuesday- @ Pascack Valley 7:00 pm 9/22 Thursday- vs. Tenafly 4:30 pm

With talented forwards and tough defenders, this team is ready to take the next step and contend for a league and state title this season. Check out the video for interviews with some of the players and Coach Vespe.
