Current Ramapo Indian Hills Superintendent Dr. Lauren Schoen will make the maximum allowed under the state-imposed superintendent salary cap, officials say
Come July 1, Mahwah schools will have a permanent leader for the first time in two years. Dr. Lauren Schoen, a former elementary school teacher and principal and current Superintendent of the Ramapo Indian Hills Regional High School District in Oakland and Franklin Lakes, was officially hired by the Board of Education as Mahwah’s new Superintendent at a meeting Wednesday night. The board approved a five-year contract for Schoen starting this summer, which district business administrator Ed Deptula said will pay the most the district legally can. “We are prepared to offer the maximum amount allowed [under the state’s superintendent salary cap], which is $167,500,” he said Wednesday. The contract will likely also include the possibility for …

Board says it hopes to find a better pool of applicants for the job next year
Mahwah’s interim superintendent will max out the time she’s legally allowed to hold the position in the district. Board of Education President Tricia Shada announced Wednesday night that Dr. Karen Lake will be staying on as interim superintendent for another year. “We had a great year with our interim, and she is a good fit for us right now,” Shada said. Lake was hired after Superintendent Dr, Charles Montesano retired at the end of the last school year. The district ran one formal and several informal searches for a permanent replacement, but those were unsuccessful. “We have already paid for one more Superintendent search that we have yet to do, so having Dr. Lake here will help us have the time to do that next year,” Shada said. “We are…

Board blames salary cap for lack of candidates
According to the Mahwah school district board of education, the prospects of finding a permanent Superintendent anytime soon are not good. Since Dr. Charles Montesano retired at the end of the last school year, Mahwah has been under the direction of interim Superintendent Dr. Karen Lake. When prompted by a question from a member of the public at a board of education meeting earlier this month, Board President Tricia Shada said the search for a new Superintendent was “absolutely nowhere. The pickings are more than slim.” Shada and the school’s administration blamed a new Superintendent salary cap for the lack of candidates for the job. The cap, imposed by the state last year, limits the superintendent salary to $167,500, plus some …

Board wants to "test the waters" to gauge interest in the open position
The Mahwah School Board is “testing the waters” to see if a superintendent solicitation will yield any candidates interested in taking over as the district’s permanent replacement for Dr. Charles Montesano, who retired in July. An interim superintendent, Dr. Karen Lake, is currently holding the position, but can only do so for a maximum of two years. The board, who completed one unsuccessful superintendent search during the spring of the 2010-2011 school year, decided at its Wednesday night meeting that it would place ads in NJ papers to gauge the candidate pool for the position. The board decided not to use the one search it has left with consulting firm R-Pat Associates. “It is worth it for us to take a shot and see who responds,” said …

County Executive Superintendent must still approve appointment
Mahwah Schools Superintendent Dr. Charles Montesano, whose retirement is effective July 1, sent a release to the district's staff after Wednesday night's Board of Education meeting revealing the woman who will take his place, in a temporary position, next year. It read: "The Mahwah Board of Education is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Karen Lake as Interim Superintendent for the 2011-12 school year. The appointment of Dr. Lake is contingent upon the approval of her contract by the County Executive Superintendent. Since the approval process can take an indeterminate amount of time, the Board chose to move forward with the appointment as quickly as possible so that Dr. Lake can be in place for July 1. Dr. Lake has served as …
