Five kid athletes faced fierce competition at the Junior Olympics in Maryland

As residents have been fixated on watching trampoline, diving, swimming, track and field and beach volleyball Olympic competitions, Mahwah kids were experiencing the real heat of competition. Five members of the township’s rec track and field team returned last week from the Junior Olympics, held this year at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland. According to township track commissioner Pete Cassotis, every Mahwah competitor came in 20th place or higher in at least one event. “I sometimes think about going to the real Olympics one day,” Colette Petric, a 12-year-old who competed in the long jump and high jump, said. “This is a great experience because it gives you a taste for it. Pole-Vaulter Signs Letter Of Intent

Mahwah High School Senior Tyler Poland recently signed a National Letter of Intent after accepting an athletic scholarship to compete on the Track and Field team at Monmouth University. Tyler will graduate from Mahwah High School as a highly decorated pole-vaulter for the Thunderbirds and will enroll at Monmouth University in the fall of 2012. Several MHS students also recently announced their intentions to play lacrosse in college. Senior is four-time indoor state sectional pole vault champion

Mahwah High School Senior Carolyn Edler signed a National Letter of Intent to pole vault for the University of North Carolina – Wilmington Seahawk Track & Field Team. Carolyn is a four-time indoor state sectional pole vault champion, three time member of  state indoor pole vault relay champion team, three time indoor league (NBIAL then Patriot League) champion for pole vault,  three time indoor Bergen County Relay champion, two time outdoor state sectional pole vault champion, one time member of state indoor high jump relay champion team, one time indoor league champion for high jump and one time outdoor state sectional high jump champion.
