Mahwah Ice Hockey Season Skating Into New Groove

A mid-season update on the Thunderbirds' performance

For the past three Februarys, Mahwah’s ice hockey team has celebrated a major victory. 2012 marked the team’s third year in a row winning the Big Green North Cup Championship. Although the team graduated several senior members at the end of last year, Coach Kevin Sabella says the remaining and new members of the team are holding their own this year. “We are not making any excuses for who we lost,” Sabella told Patch of how the T-Birds hockey season is going so far. “We are winning the games we should, and taking steps in the right direction.” So far, the team has a 9-7-3 record, and is currently ranked “near the middle of the pack,” in its league, the coach said. And Sabella, a Ramsey teacher who is now in his sixth year coaching the team …

Reader Photos: Mahwah Mites Celebrate Masterful Season

Ice hockey players mark achievement with pool party and street hockey game

In honor of a "great" 2012 season, residents Vicky and Eddie Miller hosted a celebration party for the Mahwah Mites Ice Hockey team last weekend. This team kids started ice hockey in the fall of 2011, and, according to Vicky, "not only have the children formed a wonderful friendship, but the parents also. We had a pool party to celebrate how proud we are of the Mites and for all their hard work. We also played a game of street hockey on our driveway with the children and parents. A fun time was had by all!" Congratulations to the team:

Coach: Three-Time League Champs Should Be 'Proud' Of Season

Mahwah's varsity ice hockey team won its league championship for the third year in a row, but was eliminated in the first round of the state tournament

Mahwah’s varsity ice hockey team has achieved something that, according to its coach Kevin Sabella, is a rarity among North Jersey squads – it has clinched the Big Green North Cup Championship three years in a row. Although the team fell 5-1 to Verona Monday night in the first round of the state finals, Sabella said the team should be “extremely proud” of what it’s been able to accomplish. This season, Mahwah entered the league championship as the third seed. The team beat DePaul 4-3 and Indian Hills 2-1 in the first two rounds of the tournament. In the championship game last Friday, Mahwah took on rival Ramsey. The T-Birds were “completely the underdogs,” Sabella said, playing against the number one seed in the league. “Everyone counted …

Former NJ Devil Heats Up The Ice With Mahwah Athletes

Randy Velicshek holds hockey clinic for all of Mahwah's hockey players

When Randy Velicshek came to the United States from his native Canada to begin his NHL career with the New Jersey Devils in 1985, he noticed that the sport of hockey hadn’t really caught on in the Garden State. Kids weren’t playing hockey much at all, and the need for hockey rinks was lacking. Things have changed since then. “In the last 15 years I have notices a huge improvement in the talent level of the kids on the ice. Kids and their parents are watching and playing hockey, and there are more venues then before,” Velicshek said. “Here we are on a Saturday during the summer and baseball season, and we had over 30 kids come out here today to play hockey.” Velicshek, who played five years with the Devils and is currently the head hockey …
