How Can Moms Avoid Summertime Sweets?

Asking local moms how to stay healthy this season

It’s summer, and it’s humid out – extra ice cream cones and popsicles come along with the territory. While you are watching over what your kids are eating, you might forget about taking care of yourself. In a Blog Post on the Mahwah Patch earlier this month, holistic nutritionist and health coach Rosy McCann offered the following tips on making good nutritional choices during this time of the year: What are your tips? Is it OK to indulge with your kids every once in a while?

Should Teachers And Students Be Facebook Friends?

New Missouri law makes it illegal

News broke this week that a new law in Missouri makes it illegal for teachers to be Facebook friends with their students. According to a report in Mobiledia, the law is in an effort to "more clearly define teacher-student boundaries." The law does, according to the report, allow for teachers to have "Facebook fan pages" that allow for public interaction between instructors and their classes. Do you think the law is a good idea? Do you think the law is necessary? Should New Jersey consider something similar?

How Do You Make Sure Teens Drive Safely?

Tuesday's accident has parents talking about driving safety

In light of Tuesday’s bus accident in which a pedestrian was struck by a Coach bus, parents of tweens and teens in Mahwah likely have driving at the top of their minds. According to AAA, teen drivers are at a higher risk of crashing the first time they go at it alone, when they are driving with other teens in the car, and when they are driving at night. The group also reports that teens are more likely than adults to make calls or send texts while driving and not wear their seatbelts. AAA’s website advises parents that even after teens get their licenses, “you and your teen should still regularly drive together so that you can provide feedback and instruction.” How do Mahwah parents feel? How do you make sure your kids don’t engage in …

Cont'd... "I have some very fundamental rules that have worked so far. I will, however, say that they are hard to enforce. When my son pulls away from my house, it is all left to trust. I try to communicate with him often with regard to these “rules” and also try to let him drive when we go out together so I can see how he is progressing. Some of the rules are as follows: 1- No driving with more …   more ›

Jersey Shore: Letting Your Kids Watch “Reality” Shows

New survey shows the MTV show might actually improve the Garden state’s reputation

According to the Huffington Post, a new nationwide poll shows that MTV’s The Jersey Shore isn’t hurting New Jersey’s image. In fact, it might actually be helping, according to the Farleigh Dickinson University Poll. The results got Patch wondering: How do Mahwah parents feel about this and other Jersey “reality” shows? Do you let your kids watch them? Do you feel they are giving kids a warped perception of what it is like to live here (or go on vacation down the shore), or, as the poll suggests, is it not that big of a deal?

If you were AT the shore and would witness these low-lives go at it, you'd whisk your kids away - if for no other reason just to gain some physical distance from that scene, sending an implied message to your kids that this is untolerable conduct. So - why would you silently endorse it by including this in their TV diet? You have no board-games in your house?   more ›

Moms Talk: Price of a Tooth

What's the going rate for a tooth nowadays?

My 5 1/2-year-old showed up at lunch proudly wiggling his first loose tooth! My first thought was "EWWW!" My second "Oh no! I hope I don't have to pull it out!" And then finally a few minutes later, while listening to Ben yammering on and on to his little brother about how the tooth fairy was going to come and visit him and give him money for Legos, I came around to "Uh-oh. I have no idea how much a tooth goes for nowadays!" The price of the first tooth is important. It sets the standard by which all 19 other teeth will get paid. I asked my parents. They told me that they gave me a quarter for my first tooth. Okay. That was no help. So I turn to you readers. How much do you pay for teeth? Do you differentiate? Molars get more? Do you do …

Oooh, I have to go back sometime to remember this one as my kids are both teenagers. I remember that I gave one dollar per tooth. What I remember more, is that in the midst of a busy day and night, that putting the money under the pillow was not #1 on my list although it was #1 foremost in the minds of my children. Therefore, I do remember a few mornings hearing their screeches of not finding the…   more ›

Recommend: Best Family Friendly Vacations

Looking to Mahwah parents for advice

Now that the Fourth of July has passed, Mahwah families are headed out the door! Vacation season has officially begun. For families that have yet to make plans, what are your recommendations for family-friendly getaways? We all know the obvious choices, like down the shore of Disney World. If you've been on another interesting trip that your family really enjoyed, near or far, share your experiences!

Another fun stop was the Empire State Building. Don't buy tickets from the guys standing in front of the doors. They charge much more than what the tickets cost and try to persuade you by saying the kids will love the 3-D skyride in the building. You can buy skyride tickets separately once inside and it's still cheaper. Buy tickets inside the building for the Observation Deck and treat yourself …   more ›

Video Games 101: Summer Gaming Rules?

Looking to Mahwah moms for advice

Though summer often means more time outside for kids, many also use some of their newly found free time to play video games. What are the gaming rules in your house? Do you utilize the ratings on games, or another system of determining what games are appropriate for your kids? Do you limit the amount of time they can play, or leave it up to them to decide?

Lauren Rosen, a member of the Mom's Council, emailed me the following with permission to reprint: "Although video games play a large role in some homes for recreational purposes, in mine they do not. I am not sure why my children never locked into the craze of video games, but they did not. We do have a system and some games, and occasionally my son plays them when he has friends over but …   more ›

Summertime And The Spending Is Easy

Advice from Mahwah moms on how to save some cash this summer

It's summertime, and the spending can be easy. With the kids out of school, day trips, shopping sprees, and summer activities, this is often an expensive time of year for people. So, what are your summer money saving secrets? How can you save some green while making sure that your family has a fun summer?

We are lucky to live in NJ with so many wonderful beaches. As I have always lived in NJ, summer is synonymous with the shore for me. A day at the beach can really be a day at the beach; fun and inexpensive. Bring your own stuff and research the least expensive beaches or free ones. NJ Monthly has a great shore guide that maps it all out and details all the festivities planned at the various …   more ›

Advice For Families With Graduating Seniors

Looking to Mahwah parents for advice

This Friday, several hundred township families will watch their sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren reach a milestone. As graduation nears, so too does the gamut of emotions for all friends and family members - excitment, anxiety, anticipation, and sadness, everything that goes along with closing one chapter and beginning another. Any advice for family members or for the graduates?

Patricia Patella

My advice for graduates and family members is to take a deep breath and just enjoy every minute. These milestones only happen a few times in our lives and they pass quickly. Take the time to realize everything that's going on around you. Really listen to the commencement speeches. They usually come with good advice. Spend this time with family and friends. Since many students will be leaving home…   more ›

Should Kids Get Caught Up In Dance Festivities?

Looking to Mahwah parents for advice

Ramapo Ridge's eighth grade dance is this Friday. Is it OK for kids to get caught up in dance festivities - dresses and tuxes, hair, nails, make-up, etc.?  Is it a chance for them to indulge and have fun, or an excuse for them to focus on looks and how much money their peers can spend? Have you talked to your kids about this issue? Mom's Council Member Lauren Rosen says, "Yes, it is ok to get caught up in the excitement of the dance festivities. These dances are supposed to be “special occasions” and many students have as much fun planning for them as they do attending the actual event. The photo opportunities are wonderful for parents and keep sakes for kids for years to come. But the key question is, “How much is too much?” In my opinion…

In Mahwah the 8th grade dance is a right of passage. It is very different from the other dances at the Ridge and I think it's a great experience for them all. I have boys so rather than anticipation and excitement about what to wear it's more about searching the closets to see if they have anything that still fits them so I don't have to make a trip to Kohl's with them! This year my son got …   more ›
