State Police Updating Local Crime Data Weekly

Weekly town-by-town crime data made available online

Updated crime statistics for towns and counties in New Jersey will be made available more frequently than in the past, according to State Police. Police will be updating an online database of crime stats weekly, or as often as local departments report their new information. In the past, statewide statistics on crime were updated only once per year in the annual Uniform Crime Report. Data for 2011 was released in December. “For the first time, we are able to give the public a sense of the current crime picture in their area. Even as preliminary data, this will be a great new tool for the public,” Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police Colonel Rick Fuentes said in a statement. The new data is available online here. It is currently …

Men Suffer Concussions, Injuries in Three-Car Accident on 287 South

Traffic was backed up for about a mile on and around Route 287 Tuesday afternoon, police said

Three men from Kingston, N.Y., were injured in a three-car accident on 287 in Mahwah Tuesday afternoon, according to police. At about 3:20 p.m. Tuesday, “a woman coming off the New York State Thruway into Jersey switched from the right to center lane, and struck a tractor-trailer that was in the center lane,” Mahwah Lt. Phil Tangel said Tuesday evening. “The tractor trailer then swerved, and hit a pick-up truck in the left lane. The pick-up hit the center median, causing some serious damage [to the truck]." Three adult males — two brothers and a friend — traveling in the pick-up were injured in the crash, police said. Two suffered a concussion and one back and leg injuries, Tangel said. All three were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital…

State Police Helicopter Locates Sisters Lost in Ramapo Reservation

Police used the women's cell phone GPS systems to help rescue them

A New Jersey State Police helicopter helped Mahwah and Bergen County police officers locate two hikers lost in the Ramapo Reservation Saturday night, Mahwah Police Chief Jim Batelli confirmed. According to police, two sisters, ages 19 and 22, from Oradell, were hiking in the Reservation Saturday afternoon, but became disoriented after nightfall. “Two Mahwah officers and one Bergen County officer were dispatched to the scene but even using cell phone coordinates it became apparent the [women] were far into the reservation and off any designated trail,” Batelli said. The women were led back to a trail by following police sirens, Batelli said. The women were navigating themselves using a cell phone flashlight that was running out of battery, …

'Death Race' Troopers Criminally Charged

Attorney General's Office says troopers allegedly altered plates in high-speed escort.

Two New Jersey state troopers accused of leading a high-speed escort on the Garden State Parkway for a fleet of luxury cars have been criminally charged, the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office announced. The New Jersey State Police (NJSP) received complaints regarding the March 2012 caravan to Atlantic City, and the troopers were subsequently suspended without pay in April. In a press conference in Trenton on Friday, Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa said the troopers who conducted the unauthorized escort "turned our highway into a virtual speedway." "What they did was absolutely wrong," he said. An investigation by the Division of Criminal Justice into the incident found that the troopers, Sgt. First Class Nadir Nassry, 47, and Trooper…

'Death Race' Troopers May Face Charges

Pair has been suspended since April while Attorney General's Office conducts investigation into high-speed escort.

The two state troopers allegedly involved in a high-speed luxury car escort down the Garden State Parkway in March could be criminally charged Friday and one of the troopers has resigned, according to NJ.com. New Jersey State Police Sgt. Nadir Nassry and Joseph Ventrella were suspended without pay in April, the Attorney General's Office has said. Ventrella was a member of the force for six years and was assigned to the Troop B Tactical Patrol Unit. Nassry, 47, of Phillipsburg, was a trooper of 25 years and was assigned to Totowa Station. Should State Police Overtime Be Public Info?

New Jersey Attorney General Paula Dow has blocked public access to State Police overtime. Is she right or wrong? Vote in our poll

Under a new rule by New Jersey Attorney General Paula Dow, the public no longer has the right to information about State Police overtime figures. NJ.com's Statehouse Bureau reported Wednesday that Dow's move is part of a larger campaign by the attorney general to keep certain trooper assignments confidential. A supporter said Dow's move helps protect undercover officers who can earn a lot in overtime payments from having their assignments or identities exposed. But transparency advocates said Dow's rule flies in the face of accountability and access to how the state spends taxpayer money. A New Jersey Foundation for Open Government representative said blocking access to overtime records restricts the Open Public Meetings Act and that …
