Mahwah asks residents to use caution when driving and shoveling
The township warned Mahwah residents to “stay safe,” during a snowstorm set to reach Mahwah Wednesday night. Mayor Bill Laforet sent a Nixle text message and email alert Wednesday evening saying three through six inches is expected to fall in the township between Wednesday night and Friday morning, and asked residents to be careful when driving and shoveling over the next few days. The township sent out the following Nixle alert: A winter weather advisory is in effect from 6pm Wednesday through 6 pm Thursday. Precipitation should begin as rain and transition over to a heavy snow and continue through Thursday. The district is thinking of adding itself to the Nixle text message alert system, which the town signed up for last year during Hurricane Sandy
Mahwah schools are thinking about signing up for the Nixle text message alert system to alert parents about emergency closings, half days, and send out other school-related messages. At a Board of Education meeting this week, board member Peter Wendrychowicz suggested the district look into signing up for the alerts, citing the township’s use of the system since Hurricane Sandy. "I think it works wonderfully," he said. The system is free for the district to sign up for, and would allow central administration to send out text messages to anyone who signed up to receive them. What residents need to know about getting ready for Hurricane Sandy
In advance of Hurricane Sandy, which experts say could hit Mahwah Monday, the township has activated a preparation plan that includes a new text message alert system for residents and increased staffing and preparations at the police department, fire department, Department of Public Works, and emergency response units. “As soon as the storm starts, work schedules will be abandoned,” Mayor Bill Laforet said. “We are going to be all hands on deck.” According to township officials, preparation for Hurricane Sandy started earlier this week. “We can’t control Mother Nature, but we are going to do everything we can to prepare for this storm,” Laforet said.
