Local legislators host discussion on public safety, gun violence prevention featuring guest speaker from the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.
Continuing with the ongoing discussion on public safety and gun violence prevention, local state legislators invite the public to attend a special screening of a film based on a survivor of the Virginia Tech massacre and a post-film discussion at Bergen Community College on May 7. “Living for 32,” is a portrait of Colin Goddard, his account of the terror he and his classmates endured and his journey in telling his story to America. On that horrific day, April 16, 2007, a gunman entered Norris Hall education building on the campus of Virginia Tech killing 32 and wounding 17 in a mere 11 minutes. “Living for 32 will help to illustrate the harsh reality we face as a result of senseless acts of gun violence taking place all over America,” …

Bear captured in Ramsey after two reported bear sightings in Mahwah over the weekend
A bear stuck in a tree off of Franklin Turnpike in Ramsey was shot with two tranquilizer darts Monday afternoon before being taken out of the “highly developed area,” Ramsey Fire Chief Carl Held said Monday night. “We got a call around 1 p.m. from the [Ramsey] police department asking to provide backup to a situation where a bear was stuck in a tree. They were waiting for the state police bear unit to come, but it took about an hour because the unit was responding to another bear situation at the time.” Held said a group of about a dozen Ramsey firefighters, police and animal control officers held up a netting to catch the bear as he fell from the tree Monday afternoon. “Once the state police got there, they shot the bear with …

The altercation happened in the parking lot of the Sheraton Mahwah Hotel, police said. The Mahwah fire department responded to four small fires within a two-and-a-half hour period Monday, Assistant Chief Brad Stio said. Including three brush fires in the township over the weekend, emergency responders in Mahwah have put out a total of seven similar small fires in a three-day period. Shortly after 11 a.m., another small mulch fire broke out in the Rolling Gardens development. Company 1 responded to the small fire near Franklin Turnpike, …
Three of the fires, including one near the lodge at Campgaw Mountain, were brush fires caused by dry weather conditions, officials say
Four fires, three of which were considered brush fires, broke out in Mahwah over the Easter weekend, Assistant Fire Chief Brad Stio said Sunday night. None resulted in injury or serious damage, he said. Saturday afternoon, a brush fire broke out on the slope of the Campgaw Mountain Reservation, not far from the facility’s ski lodge, Stio said. “It was about a 100-foot-wide brush fire, maybe a little more,” he said. Mahwah Companies 4 and 5, and the NJ Forest Fire Service responded to the blaze and “put it out pretty quickly,” Stio said. Though it didn’t result in serious damage, Stio said that because of the location of the fire and weather conditions, “it could have been really bad.” Sunday afternoon after 4 p.m., a “very small brush fire…

Fire started from landscaper's electrical wire, officials said
The Mahwah Fire Department quickly put out a brush fire off Airmont Ave. in Mahwah Tuesday morning, Assistant Fire Chief Brad Stio said. A “small brush fire” broke out near a home on Aronow Place after 9 a.m. Tuesday, Stio said. “It started from a landscaper’s electrical wire, but the brush was near an electric power box on the home that started smoking, so we called in additional backup to make sure we had enough manpower,” Stio said. Public Service and Orange and Rockland responded to the fire along with the Mahwah Fire Department, “as a precaution,” Stio said. “We disconnected the wire, and put the fire out quickly,” Stio said. The small fire did not result in any injuries or serious damage.
