Still Time to Help Family Hit by Fire

Residents can order tickets to the Mahwah Elves fundraiser for the Mann family through this Friday

The deadline to buy tickets to a community fundraiser for a Mahwah family in need has been extended, so you still have a few days left to help out! The Mahwah Elves, a group of township residents that came together after Hurricane Irene with the goal of helping their neighbors going through difficult situations, have gotten together to help a family that recently lost its home and all of its belongings in a Stag Hill house fire. The Elves are hosting a Festive Fundraiser at the end of the month at the Mahwah Elks Lodge. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Mann family. The event will be an upbeat one – complete with dinner, beer, wine, soda, dessert, music provided by DJ O, and a silent auction. And the prizes up for grabs at…

Fire Department: Mahwah Will Help Family Recover

The MFD is hosting a pancake breakfast Sunday to benefit the township family that lost its house in a fire

Since a fire broke out at their Stag Hill home Jan. 2, Roger Mann, his wife Becky and their three kids have been relying on help from the community to recuperate from an astounding loss. The family’s house was completely destroyed. “By the time we got there, it was already fully involved,” Ken Warnet, a Mahwah firefighter who responded to the house fire, said. “As a firefighter, the most discouraging thing you can see is a homeowner standing on the lawn with a look of total despair as he watches his house burn down.” None of the items left in the house were salvageable, firefighters say. And, the fire claimed the life of the family’s dog. “They really lost absolutely everything,” Warnet said. “It was completely devastating. They have to re…

Police Find Fire-Stricken Family's Stolen Tools

Burglars stole some of the only items a Mahwah family had left, police said

Mahwah Police have recovered most of the tools stolen from a family that lost its house in a fire, Chief Jim Batelli said this week. Following up on a tip from a local resident, the MPD found most of the thousands of dollars worth of tools that were stolen last weekend from a shed that was left standing near a Stag Hill home that burned to the ground earlier this month, Batelli said. Most of the stolen tools, which included two chainsaws, a table saw, a circular saw and other tools, were found Monday, not far from the Mountain Road home, Batelli said. All of the items of significant value that were stolen were found, police said. The Bergen County Bureau of Criminal Investigation processed the found tools, and dusted them for fingerprints…

Friend Hosting Jewelry Party to Benefit Family Recovering from Fire

Stop by the Lia Sophia event next week at the Ramapo Reformed Church to pick up some jewelry and donate to the Mann family

Mahwah resident Michelle Ketendjian is using her business to help raise money for her friends Roger and Becky Mann, who lost their home in a fire earlier this month. The Lia Sophia jewelry advisor said after the fire, she felt she could use her position to both list the family’s spirits and raise money for them to continue to rebuild after the fire. “I have been friends with Becky and Roger since my nephews started wrestling with their sons in 2010,” Ketendjian said. “My husband coached their son in football for a year. My brother in-law and my husband also coach both boys in wrestling every year.  Now, the Manns have become such great friends of ours that I call their daughter Destiny my ‘niece.’”   Ketendjian, who has been a Lia Sophia …

Burglars Strike Remnants of Mahwah Home Destroyed by Fire

Police are looking for burglars who they say stole the few items the family owned that were not destroyed in the blaze

Mahwah Police are looking for a person or group of people who stole thousands of dollars in tools from a shed left standing next to the remnants of a township home that burned to the ground last week, authorities said Wednesday. Police Chief James Batelli called the burglars, who police say broke the lock on the shed to steal tools the family had inside it, “people of very questionable character, to take the few belongings this family has left.” According to police, Roger Mann – who recently thanked the community for its support after the fire - returned to his Stag Hill home Sunday night after a family member noticed the lock on the family’s shed next to the home had been cut off. Burglars stole two chainsaws, a table saw, a circular saw …

Family that Lost Home Thanks Community for Love, Support

Mann family's home burned to the ground in a fire last week

The following letter was submitted to the Mahwah Patch by Roger and Becky Mann, who lost their Stag Hill home in a fire last week. To Our Friends, Family, the Community and So Many More, Words can not begin to describe our gratitude towards all of you. Between the floods of phone calls, texts, and Facebook messages of support and concern, to the clothes, gift cards, and other generous donations and offers that have been coming in, so many people have reached out in so many ways and touched our hearts beyond belief. To know we're not alone in this and to have so many people that care lets us know we are blessed. If it wasn't for all of you, we don't know how we would be making it through this. We can't begin to tell you how grateful we are …

Fire likely started near a wood-burning stove, officials said

A two-story, wood-frame home at the top of Stag Hill Road is considered a total loss after firefighters from Mahwah and surrounding towns fought the fully involved structure fire that broke out in it Wednesday night, Police Chief James Batelli said. According to police, a woman and her three kids were in their Mountain Road home Wednesday evening when the woman went outside to gather wood for wood-burning stove. When she returned to the house, she noticed a large fire inside, and got her three children out of the house, authorities said. Everyone was evacuated safely.
