35 Years ago, an empty century-old barn in Stony Point, NY, became a repository of dreams as the home of Rockland County's first year-round non-profit professsional theatre - Peguin Rep. Since 1977, Peguin Rep has attracted more than 300,000 audience members for the Tri-State region and beyond to its intimate converted barn. Under the leadership of founder/artisitic director <strong>Joe Brancato </strong>and executive director Andrew M. Horn, the company has orginated mor than 100 productios by such writers as<strong> Lee Blessing, Ronald Harwood, Arthur Laurents, Warren Leight, William Mastosimone, Tom Dudzick, James Sherman, Elizabeth Swados </strong>and<strong> Allan knee</strong>. Many Penguin's Plays have moved on to engagements in New York City, around the country and onto film, including<strong> Karoline Leach's </strong>Tryst, <strong>Warren Leight's </strong>Glimmer, Glimmer and Shine, <strong>Richard Vetere's </strong>One Shot, One Kill, <strong>Alan Brandt's </strong>2 1/2 Jews, <strong>Angelo Parra's </strong>The Devil's Music, <strong>Charles Smith's </strong>Freed and <strong>James Sherman's </strong>From Door to Door.
The Academy Award nominated film, finding Neverland, began life as a play, The Man who Was Peter Pan, which was commissioned and origionally presented by Penguin, as did the CBSTV film The Marraige Fool with <strong>Carol Burnett </strong>and <strong>Walter Matthau</strong>.
Academy Award winner <strong>Kevin Spacey </strong>produced Joe's staging of Lee Blessing's Gobb Off Broadway and, with <strong>Garry Marshall</strong>, in L.A. The New York Times has dubbed Penguin Rep "the gutiest little theatre" and Joe Brancato "one of America's most insightful directors." The Journal News wrote that Penguin Rep "continues to astonish with a consistency of taste, high quality material and first class production values."
