@Mike "Future blue and white hires will belong to a new employee tier with salary ranges that are 10 percent lower across the board." Savings are years away, but the contract was negotiated in recognition of the need to reduce costs.

@fred - Council just did precisely that for all new blue and white employees. Longevity was also eliminated. http://fairlawn-saddlebrook.patch.com/articles/borough-workers-reach-6-year-contract-agreement

Sorry about that. I took the location out and forgot to put it back in. The ceremony is in front of borough hall, 8-01 Fair Lawn Ave.

He'll keep the civil service designation. He'll just now have the "Deputy Borough Manager" title, which is not civil service, but comes with a stipend.

Not as far as I'm aware of. You could try calling the recycling department for more info - 201-794-5304.

@Sara T - The general sentiment is that the increase in burglaries (it's happening all over, not just in Fair Lawn) is related to the economy and more people falling on tough times financially. Last April, the FLPD expanded its night patrol in response to a wave of overnight commercial burglaries (here's the article on that which also touches on explanations for why burglaries may be increasing and why they're tough to combat: http://patch.com/A-s7Sl).

@gonetomahwah - These two recent incidents are the only times FLPD has dealt with him, I believe. He'd been locked up for all but about 10 months since mid-2008.

@jp1 - According to the state prison records, he had spent the better part of the last four years in jail. Was released in August 2012.

ReplyI don't usually intercede in the comment threads, but can we please try to keep this about honoring the memory of a woman who gave her life in the line of duty. However, you may feel about the way the town spends its money, I'd prefer you leave those comments on other articles (of which there are many) that relate specifically to monetary issues. Let's please keep this and other comment threads about Mary Ann's memorial ceremony focused on her out of respect for her sacrifice and the loss felt by her family and the Fair Lawn Police Department. Thanks.

Overall budget expenditures increased by $316,127 (0.73 percent), even though salary and wage increases (some contractually obligated, others due to a loss in recycling revenue that is used to offset recycling employees' labor costs) were $704,750. That doesn't happen without cuts/debt refinancing, etc.
