Mahwah Honda To Open A New Location

Light service and oil changes will be offered at new Route 17 location, where Prestige Mini is currently

During the Valentine's Day Planning Board meeting, its first time since December of 2010, the council approved Mahwah Honda's proposals related to their new location on Route 17.

CLF Northern NJ Auto Sales, Inc. was seeking a similar acceptance to multiple zoning variances that were granted to the dealership at the site they are acquiring – Prestige Mini.

Their main argument was that aside from signage changes and aesthetic alterations dictated in part by Honda corporate, this was a zoning request based on similar usage.

The most notable change will be the addition of a cylinder and wave elements that have become iconic symbols of Honda dealerships.

There will be a “re-skinning” of the building to match the Honda corporate model, as well as the addition of a “delivery canopy” for the presentation of new cars to their new owners on the northern side of the building.

Light service such as oil changes, tire rotation and the like will be performed at this dealership, but no engine or auto-body repairs will take place.

Lights already existing in the parking lot, as well as truck delivery access from Island Road already established at the existing Mini dealership will be unchanged.

Council President DaPuzzo expressed concerns about parking, which were echoed by other members of the council.  One concern he had was with regards to Mini offering a very limited line-up of inventory types, while Honda offers considerably more.

Of greater concern to him, however, was the planned handicapped parking just off an entrance to the repair bays that would only grant access to employees.  It was confirmed that these would not, in all likelihood, fall into ADA compliance.

DaPuzzo also addressed the “real world” issue of double-parking to fit more inventory.  Representatives of CLF Northern NJ Auto Sales, Inc stated that for the foreseeable future the current Mahwah Honda dealership on the Franklin Turnpike will remain open – giving them more than enough space for maximum exposure and juggling of inventory.

The Planning Board voted unanimously to approve the zoning request, with the change for the handicapped parking, for the Honda dealership.  Prestige Mini will be relocating to Ramsey – taking over one of the dealerships no longer active on Route 17.

The next Planning Board meeting is scheduled for Feb. 28.
