'Candidates Night' Will Intro Four Vying for Mahwah Council Seat

Library Board-hosted event will allow council candidates to give introductions, and answer questions they haven't seen before.

For the third year in a row, the Mahwah Public Library Board of Trustees will host an event that they say will give township residents information about the local political choices they’ll be making on Election Day.

This year, four residents are vying to fill a one-year unexpired term on the Mahwah township council. The seat was vacated earlier this year when Councilman John Spiech retired.

According to a release from the Library Board, it will host all four for a ‘Meet the Candidates Night’ forum next Wednesday, October 23, at 7 p.m. This year’s forum will happen in the library’s Winter Room.

During the event, the candidates - Planning Board member and previous council candidate Jonathan Marcus, former councilman and Bergen County Freeholder Rob Hermansen, Environmental Commission member Gregg Sgambati, and political newcomer Jonathan Wong – will give personal introductions and outline their platforms.

The quartet will then answer questions posed by moderators. The candidates will not know the questions beforehand. No questions from the audience will be entertained.

Candidates will not directly debate one another.

Mahwah Patch editor Jessica Mazzola, and reporters from the Bergen Record and Suburban News, will moderate the event.
