Mahwah Backs Christie by Big Margin

But, voter turnout in the township was down significantly over last year.

Mahwah voters were out in full force Tuesday to support Governor Chris Christie’s reelection in his gubernatorial race against Democratic challenger Barbara Buono.

According to unofficial tallies released by the township clerk Tuesday night, more than 70.8% of Mahwah voters supported Governor Christie in the election.

According to the preliminary tallies, 4,846 voters voted for Christie, while Buono got 1,993 votes.

Overall, voter turnout in 2013 was lower in Mahwah than it was during the 2012 election. This year, about 7,092 voters went to the polls, or about 43.6% of all registered voters in the township, the results said.

In 2012, a presidential election year, about 68.2% of Mahwah voters turned out to the polls. In 2011, voter turnout was about 41.6%.

Statewide, the election was called for Christie soon after polls closed Tuesday night. Preliminary results showed him winning by about 20 percentage points across the state.
