Town Council President Wins Car in Charity Raffle

The Mahwah Municipal Alliance's annual raffle awarded the politician a new Audi Q5.

Mahwah Town Council President Harry Williams said he only purchased one of the 800 raffle tickets sold in this year’s Mahwah Municipal Alliance car raffle that gave away a new Audi Q5.

The politician said he was shocked to receive news Friday that his ticket – Number 480 – had been chosen as the winner of the car.

“I am still stunned because I never win anything,” Williams told Patch Sunday night. “I only bought one ticket this year which makes it more surprising, because in the past I've bought two or three.”

Williams said he buys tickets for the annual raffle drawing as a sign of support for the MMA, a charity group made up of police officers and local volunteers that put on programming for township teens and their parents.

“I buy these as a contribution and never expect to win so my family and I are still in a state of disbelief,” Williams said.

Earlier this week, MMA members thanked the community for supporting the raffle, which sold out of tickets early last week. MMA members say the raffle helps support programming like the summertime Junior Police Academy and Youth Leadership Academy, as well as workshops and seminars for parents and teens throughout the year.

While Williams said he is excited about his family’s new car, he’s not sure how much actual drive time he’s going to get in it.

“My wife loves Audi, so I hope I'll get to drive it occasionally,” he said.
